To remain competitive, Poland must enhance its offensive game, much like its high-scoring friendlies against Serbia. Their next match against a relentless Icelandic attack promises to be intense, and surpassing the 58.5-goal mark is anticipated as both teams seek victory. With Poland needing a result, a vigorous offensive approach is crucial.

Match Preview

Both teams enter this matchup under pressure after contrasting opening-round performances. Iceland exploded offensively in Round 1, while Poland struggled badly at the back but showed attacking promise in pre-tournament games. With elimination potentially on the line, a fast-paced and high-scoring contest is expected in Kristianstad.

Poland Forced to Chase the Game

Qualification was far from smooth for Poland, who collected just two wins and two draws from six matches to finish second behind Portugal, narrowly edging Romania and Israel.

Their January friendlies against Serbia underlined the same pattern seen all year. Poland edged the first clash 33-32 before settling for a 32-32 draw, producing points consistently but failing to stabilize defensively.

That lack of structure was exposed in the tournament opener, where Poland were outclassed by Hungary 29-21. After taking an early 2-0 lead, they collapsed defensively and never recovered. Tomasz Gębala led the scoring with three goals.

Iceland’s Attack in Full Flow

Iceland made a statement in their European Championship 2026 opener, overwhelming Italy 39-26 after scoring 21 goals in the first half alone. Janus Daði Smárason starred with nine goals in a dominant display.

They were equally convincing in qualification, winning all six matches in Group 3 against Georgia, Greece and Bosnia & Herzegovina.

Preparations included a solid 32-26 win over Slovenia, followed by a competitive 31-29 defeat to reigning champions France, showing Iceland can score even against elite opposition.

Verdict

Poland must play at a higher offensive tempo to stay alive, just as they did in the Serbia friendlies where 65 total goals were scored across two matches. Iceland’s attack looked ruthless in Round 1, and with both teams needing a result, backing over 58.5 goals looks like the best play.
