The United States gave themselves an opportunity to advance in World Championship by winning last time out.

America entered the tournament as reigning World and Winter Olympics champions, but with a weakened squad in comparison to those successful groups.

They opened the tournament with a 3-1 defeat to Switzerland in a rematch of last year’s final, only to rebound with a 5-1 victory over Great Britain.

The United States failed to build on that as they lost 6-2 to Finland, but responded with a 3-2 victory over Germany.

America again failed to back up a win, falling 4-2 to Latvia, only to again issue an immediate reaction to a defeat, beating Hungary 7-3 to set up this must-win matchup with the Austrians.

Austria On Three-Game Losing Run

Austria remain fourth in the group – meaning they are in a qualification spot – but they go into this game having lost three straight.

The Austrians received a favourable schedule to start the tournament, and they took full advantage with a three-game win streak.

They opened the competition with a 5-2 win over Great Britain, and backed that up by beating Hungary 4-2 and Latvia 3-1.

Austria’s perfect start was ended in humbling fashion though, as they fell 9-0 to Switzerland, and they have not been able to get back on track.

The Austrians were beaten 6-2 by Germany in their next outing, and go into this matchup on the back of a 5-2 defeat to Finland.
