The 2026 Currie Cup sees both the Sharks and Cheetahs starting strong with narrow first-round victories. Despite playing away, the Sharks are favored based on their recent performance and historical record—winning 4 of their last 5 games and leading the head-to-head 16-9. While the Cheetahs edged the Golden Lions thanks to a late penalty, Sharks winger Lyle Matthews impressed with three tries against the Pumas. Pundits are backing the Sharks to cover the -2.5 handicap in this anticipated matchup.

Both the Cheetahs and Sharks began their 2026 Currie Cup campaigns with victory last weekend, and both were narrow wins. Despite being at home, I fancy the Sharks based solely on performance from last week.

Sharks Looking Strong

  • Sharks have won 4 of their last 5 matches (Currie Cup).
  • Sharks won 3 of their last 5 games against the Cheetahs (Currie Cup).
  • Cheetahs have lost 3 of their last 5 fixtures (Currie Cup).

Sharks Hold H2H Advantage

In their last 27 matches, the Sharks lead 16-9 with two draws.

Cheetahs Late Win

The Cheetahs slotted a late penalty to come out on top in their opening Carling Currie Cup match against the Golden Lions last weekend, winning 29-27 at home after leading 16-13 at half-time.

The Free State Cheetahs performed well in last year's competition. They lost 37-35 to the Boland Cavaliers, defeated the Pumas 42-25, edged the Sharks 7-5, beat Western Province 31-24, the Golden Lions 47-31, lost to the Griquas 40-10, and beat the Bulls 35-31 during the regular season before losing to the Griquas 25-5 in the semi-finals.

The Cheetahs will be aiming to reproduce a similar run of results as they did last season, but will have to be on top of their game against the Sharks, as their opponents have won four of their five matches in the Currie Cup.

Sharks Narrow Escape

The Hollywoodbets Sharks held onto their first-half advantage in their Carling Currie Cup opener against the Pumas last weekend, winning 26-24 away after leading 19-5 at the break.

The Sharks struggled at the start of their campaign last season. They lost 46-5 to the Griquas, 64-0 to the Bulls, 7-5 to the Cheetahs, and 26-17 to the Griquas before beating Western Province 29-21, Boland 33-31, and the Pumas 19-13.

The Hollywoodbets Sharks will be pleased to have started their season with a victory, but face a tricky test away to the Cheetahs, as their opponents have the home-ground advantage for this fixture.
