The format and participation criteria for Champions League Volleyball Women have changed a number of times in the recent past. It is right now open to the national champions of the 56 participating National Federations. Additional spots are also available depending on the ranking which take into account the results achieved by the National Federations across the last three editions of this tournament.

Volley Bergamo of Italy and VakifBank Istanbul of Turkey are the joint-record winners in the Champions League Volleyball Women with four titles each. Istanbul have in fact won three of their four titles in the last five editions of the tournament.

The 20 participating teams are divided into five pools with each team playing the other home and away. The teams are given three points if they win a match by 3-0 or 3-1 sets. Two points will be awarded to the winner and one point to the loser if the final margin is 3-2. Because of this unique format, there is a chance of teams ending up on same points at the end of league phase. In that case, a Golden Set is used to split the teams. This is played straight after the conclusion of the second match between the two teams as a tie-break set of 15 points with a minimum of two points needed to win.
