Japan made it all the way to the semifinals in the previous edition of the Nations League before losing to Poland in the 3rd place decider, but their performances in the ongoing season have been very encouraging as they share top spot in the standings with Brazil at 5-0.
They justified the favorite tag in the opening round by beating France 3-1 in early June, followed by two more convincing performances against Ukraine 3-1 and Germany 3-0.
Japan were properly challenged by Canada earlier this week, nearly throwing away a 2-0 lead before eventually securing a 3-2 victory and maintaining their unbeaten record.
Their problems continued against underdog Serbia two days ago, falling behind 2-1 before completing a comeback. Japan narrowly escaped in the fourth set 32-30 before finishing the job comfortably in the deciding set 15-7.
Czech Republic Hoping to Stay in the Playoff Picture
The Czech Republic are producing mixed results so far in the Nations League 2026, claiming three wins in six appearances but remaining in a solid position to compete for a playoff spot, currently sitting 8th in the standings.
They started the month with a massive upset over favored China, winning 3-0, followed by a 3-0 defeat to Poland and then back-to-back victories against Belgium and Thailand without dropping a set.
Their form has dipped in recent matches though, suffering straight-set defeats against two tournament heavyweights, Italy and the United States.

Japan deserve the favorite status but have looked vulnerable in recent outings, needing five sets against both Canada and Serbia. The Czech Republic already upset China earlier this season, so backing them to win at least one set looks like good value.
