Australia Carrying Strong Qualifying Form
Australia qualified for the Basketball World Championship 2026 by winning the Asian Cup last year, taking down Japan 88-79 in the grand final.
Despite already qualifying, they participated in the global WC Qualifying Tournament held in Turkey earlier this year and delivered outstanding performances, topping the group with five wins in five matches against Hungary, Turkey, Japan, Canada and Argentina.
38-year-old veteran and team captain Sami Whitcomb was named tournament MVP, averaging close to 14 points and 2.2 steals per game.
Australia finished in 3rd place and won a bronze medal at the previous World Championship 2022 in Sydney.
Puerto Rico Barely Made it to Germany
This is going to be the third appearance for Puerto Rico at the World Championships, with their best result being 8th place four years ago in Australia.
They struggled hard in the qualifying tournament in mid-March, losing their first three appearances to Italy 78-41, USA 91-48 and Spain 91-52.
Puerto Rico faced a must-win situation in the fourth round and defeated Senegal 56-47, where both sides had disastrous shooting numbers, while sealing a spot for the WC 2026 thanks to a 77-61 win over New Zealand in the final round.
