USA haven't lost a single match at the World Championship since the 2006 semifinals and have won 66 games in a row since. They are tagged as massive favorites to start the 2026 tournament with a commanding win over China.
USA Continuing Their Dominant WC Run
The USA Women's team had an impeccable run four years ago in Australia, winning all eight games at the World Championship 2022 to secure their fourth consecutive gold medal, crushing China 83-61 in the final match.
They qualified automatically for this upcoming tournament by winning the 2025 FIBA Women's AmeriCup, outplaying Brazil 92-84 in the grand final.
The Stars and Stripes still participated in the global qualifying tournament in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in March and won all five encounters to finish top of the group. The closest game here was an 84-70 win over Spain.
China Looking to Challenge the Favorites
As mentioned above, China had a historic run at the previous World Championship 2022, making a lot of upsets to reach the grand final, where they fell against a superior USA side 83-61.
The Asian powerhouse was one of the hosts for the WC 2026 qualifying tournaments and advanced without a lot of trouble with four wins in five games, beating Mali, Czechia, Brazil and South Sudan, while the only loss came against Belgium.
They played three friendly matches in August as preparations for Berlin and lost all three games to Nigeria 88-77, Italy 88-76 and, most recently, Spain 72-71 in overtime.
