South Korea's recent performance has been poor, leading analysts to strongly favor Nigeria in their upcoming match, especially given Nigeria's status as arguably the best African team in the tournament. The recommendation is for Nigeria to win with a –8.5 handicap, indicating expectations of a significant victory margin. The key conclusion is clear: Nigeria is poised to dominate South Korea based on current form and tournament strength.

Match Preview

These two sides clashed in the March qualifiers, where South Korea won 77-60, but a lot of things have changed since then, especially for the Asian side. Nigeria are favored to start the tournament with a win.

South Korea Looking to Recover From Poor Form

South Korea had a disappointing run at the FIBA Basketball World Championship 2022, finishing in 10th place after winning just one out of five games in the group stages (beat Bosnia & Herzegovina 99-66).

They secured their 17th consecutive appearance at the big stage thanks to strong results at the 2025 FIBA Women's Asia Cup, but participated in the global qualifiers nonetheless in March in France.

There, the South Korean squad finished third with three wins and two defeats, beating lower-placed Nigeria 77-60, Colombia 82-52 and the Philippines 105-74.

Nigeria Returning to the World Cup Stage

Nigeria qualified for the previous Women's Basketball World Cup in 2022, but their government decided to withdraw the team from international competitions.

They became the first African team to reach the knockout stage in the 2018 World Cup edition, making it to the quarterfinals, while securing a spot in Germany by winning the AfroBasket in 2025.

Nonetheless, Nigeria participated in the global qualifiers in France in March and advanced as the 4th-placed squad with a 2-3 record. They were competitive against big guns France and Germany but still lost these clashes.

Verdict

South Korea's recent form has been disastrous, and I don't see them stopping probably the best African side in this tournament. Nigeria to win with a –8.5 handicap is tipped.
