The Super Lig Finals continue in Istanbul after Besiktas stunned the favorites in the opening clash and stole home-court advantage. Fenerbahce now enter Game 2 under pressure knowing another defeat would leave them in a difficult position.
Fenerbahce Looking to Respond After Shock Defeat
Fenerbahce were tagged big favorites to open the Super Lig final series with a victory last week but suffered a surprise 88-80 defeat in front of the home crowd. They missed too many free throws (15/23), while one of their key scorers, Talen Horton-Tucker, was limited to just nine points.
Sarunas Jasikevicius’s side also looked vulnerable in the semifinals, needing four games to eliminate Anadolu Efes, with all three victories coming in very tight contests.
The Yellow Canaries also had a disappointing EuroLeague campaign where they failed to defend the title after losing convincingly to eventual winners Olympiakos 79-61 in the semifinals. Their offensive execution and shot selection were below their usual standards in Game 1 and a response is expected.
Besiktas Flying After Game 1 Win
Besiktas were heavily carried by Berk Ugurlu in Game 1 against Fenerbahce, with the guard stealing the spotlight by scoring 20 points while converting 8 of his 10 field-goal attempts. They also made excellent decisions inside the arc and finished with 61% two-point shooting (22/36).
Dusan Alimpijevic’s side were on the verge of elimination in the semifinals after falling behind Bahcesehir 2-1, but responded with a hard-fought 73-71 road win to level the series before winning the decider at home 80-71. Devon Dotson played a decisive role there with 26 points.
Besiktas also reached the EuroCup finals where they lost 2-0 to Bourg, while in the Super Lig quarterfinals they eliminated Galatasaray 2-1.
Verdict
Fenerbahce have no room for error after dropping the opener and should come out with much higher intensity on both ends of the floor. They have been the dominant force in Turkish basketball for years, and I expect the Yellow Canaries to adjust quickly and level the series.
