Mexico, hosts of the upcoming World Cup, are favorites in their friendly against Serbia, thanks to recent solid performances. Mexico has won five of their last seven games and kept six clean sheets, while Serbia’s inexperienced squad is struggling, coming off a heavy defeat and missing several key players. The likely result is a Mexico win to nil, as the hosts are in strong form and defensively robust, while Serbia continues its inconsistent run.

Mexico vs Serbia Predictions

World Cup hosts Mexico should have the momentum and the greater desire to claim the spoils against an inexperienced Serbian side in Friday’s international friendly.

A home win to nil is my preferred pick at Estadio Nemesio Diez.

Home Win on the Cards

  • Mexico won 5 of their last 7 matches
  • Mexico kept a clean sheet in 6 of their last 7 matches
  • Serbia lost 5 of their last 8 matches
  • Serbia failed to score in their last 5 defeats

Mexico and Serbia Set For Second-Ever Encounter

Mexico and Serbia will meet for the second time on Friday. Mexico claimed a 2-0 win in their only previous encounter in 2011.

Mexico Extend Unbeaten Run

Mexico face their final World Cup warm-up fixture after a pair of friendly victories at the end of May. Javier Aguirre’s men claimed a fine 2-0 win against Ghana before a hard-fought 1-0 success against Australia last weekend.

Johan Vasquez’s third international goal sealed victory against the Socceroos after goals from Guillermo Martinez and Brian Gutierrez secured the spoils against Ghana.

The World Cup hosts have found some strong form ahead of their third time hosting the finals. Mexico are unbeaten in their last seven matches, with five victories recorded during that run.

Defensively solid, El Tri have conceded just one goal in their last seven games, while they have kept clean sheets in each of their five most recent wins.

Over a longer period, Mexico have become a difficult side to beat. Aguirre’s men have lost only two of their last 20 international fixtures played over the past 12 months.

Serbia Struggles Continue

An inexperienced Serbian selection makes the trip to Mexico after a thumping 3-0 defeat against World Cup qualifiers Cape Verde last weekend. Two second-half goals conceded ensured a heavy defeat for the out-of-form Europeans.

Now led by Veljko Paunovic, the Serbs failed to qualify for the upcoming FIFA World Cup following a disappointing qualification campaign.

The Eagles finished third in UEFA qualification Group K, 11 points behind England and one point behind regional rivals Albania, missing out on a playoff spot.

Inconsistency proved the biggest issue for the Europeans. Serbia won four but lost three of their World Cup qualifiers, including a dismal 5-0 home defeat against England.

The Serbs struggled to make an impact in the final third, failing to score in each of their five losses over the past nine months.

Squads and Team News

Mexico Squad

Goalkeepers: Guillermo Ochoa, Raul Rangel, Carlos Acevedo.
Defenders: Jesus Gallardo, Cesar Montes, Jorge Sanchez, Johan Vasquez, Israel Reyes, Mateo Chavez.
Midfielders: Edson Alvarez, Orbelin Pineda, Roberto Alvarado, Luis Romo, Luis Chavez, Erik Lira, Gilberto Mora, Brian Gutierrez, Obed Vargas, Alvaro Fidalgo.
Forwards: Raul Jimenez, Alexis Vega, Santiago Gimenez, Cesar Huerta, Julian Quinones, Guillermo Martinez, Armando Gonzalez.

Head coach Aguirre has a 26-man squad available this week. Vice-captain Cesar Montes is the only reported injury issue for the Mexicans.

Experienced Fulham forward Raul Jimenez is poised to win his 124th cap at Estadio Nemesio Diez.

Serbia Squad

Goalkeepers: Filip Stankovic, Veljko Ilic, Luka Lijeskic.
Defenders: Strahinja Pavlovic, Strahinja Erakovic, Kosta Nedeljkovic, Ognjen Mimovic, Stefan Bukinac, Vukasin Djurdjevic, Nikola Simic, Adem Avdic, Mirko Milikic, Petar Petrovic.
Midfielders: Andrija Zivkovic, Veljko Birmancevic, Andrija Maksimovic, Aleksandar Stankovic, Njegos Petrovic, Lazar Randjelovic, Dejan Zukic, Vladimir Lucic, Vasilije Kostov, Petar Stanic, Vanja Dragojevic.
Forwards: Nikola Stulic, Mihailo Ivanovic, Jovan Milosevic.

Serbian boss Veljko Paunovic has an inexperienced selection available for Friday’s international fixture. Twenty-two of the 27-man squad have ten international caps or fewer.

Experienced forwards Alexander Mitrovic, Dusan Vlahovic and Luka Jovic are among the notable absentees for the Europeans.

Verdict

Mexico will be keen to put in a winning performance ahead of their World Cup opener next week.

A home win to nil should prove a solid pick at Estadio Nemesio Diez.
