In the EFL Cup fixture between Brentford and Sunderland, Sunderland are tipped on the double chance market (win or draw). Sunderland have shown recent improvement and are currently on a mini-unbeaten run, while Brentford have struggled to break a sequence of draws. This form makes Sunderland win or draw the preferred selection for the match, with the recommendation based on both sides' recent performances and the visitors' momentum.

Sunderland vs Brentford Preview

Sunderland were much improved in their home draw against Leeds on Sunday. Brentford haven’t won many games recently and the Black Cats can win or draw in the EFL Cup.

Bees Winless in 3

  • Sunderland have drawn their last 2 games.
  • Sunderland are unbeaten in 2 of their last 3 matches against Brentford.
  • Brentford are winless in their last 3 matches.

H2H - Black Cats on Top

Sunderland have a 10-7 advantage against Brentford, alongside five draws.

Sunderland Becoming Harder to Beat

Regis Le Bris’ Sunderland rarely lose at home and are undefeated in seven of their last nine at the Stadium of Light. The Black Cats beat Hull 1-0 at home in the EFL Cup third round.

Sunderland had a dip in form either side of the international break, losing 5-3 at Man City and 2-0 against Brighton. They responded with a 2-1 comeback Europa League victory at Torreense.

The Wearside outfit then lost 2-0 at Bournemouth before securing consecutive draws. Sunderland held Lech Poznan to a 1-1 stalemate in the Europa League and had 2.97 XG.

Le Bris’ team drew again after a goalless home draw with Leeds on Sunday. The Black Cats had 15 shots, four on target, allowed -1 XG and couldn’t net the winning goal.

Brentford Draw Loads of Matches

Keith Andrews’ Brentford have struggled to maintain winning form this season. The London team are winless in six of their last eight, drawing five.

The Bees drew three games in a row before defeating Reading 2-1 in the EFL Cup. Brentford followed the cup victory with a 3-0 home triumph over Chelsea.

Andrews’ side couldn’t maintain momentum and are winless in three consecutive games. That streak started with a 2-2 stalemate at Aston Villa and a 2-1 home defeat against Liverpool.

Brentford drew their fourth away game in five this season following a 1-1 draw at Hull. The Bees were 1-0 down at half time and Dango Ouattara levelled in the 63rd minute.

Predicted Starting Lineups & Team News

Sunderland (4-2-3-1): Melker Ellborg; Trai Hume, Omar Alderete, Luke O'Nien, Dayann Methalie; Chris Rigg, Jules Ahoka; Jocelin Ta Bi, Chemsdine Talbi, Malick Fofana; Timur Tuterov

Defender Dan Ballard is ruled out with a muscle injury. Winger Romaine Mundle is also unavailable due to a knee issue.

Striker Wilson Isidor and defender Thomas Meunier could return to the squad against Brentford. Regis Le Bris explained that Meunier “will be available coming off the bench” for Wednesday’s cup clash.

Brentford (4-2-3-1): Ellery Balcombe; Michael Kayode, Rico Henry, Kristoffer Ajer, El Hadji Malick Diouf; Mikkel Damsgaard, Mamadou Sangare; Dango Ouattara, Fabio Carvalho, Keane Lewis-Potter; Callum Wilson

Midfielder Yehor Yarmolyuk is suspended and attacker Kaye Furo is sidelined following recent surgery.

Verdict

Sunderland have improved recently and will want to maintain their mini-unbeaten run in the EFL Cup. Brentford are struggling to break their run of away draws and a home double chance bet is the best bet.
