Tigres vs Cruz Azul Predictions & Tips - Entertaining Liga MX Encounter Expected

Tigres take on Cruz Azul at Estadio Universitario in the Liga MX Apertura, with both teams to score the main recommendation. Cruz Azul are in excellent form, seeking a fifth consecutive win, but Tigres have proven difficult to beat at home, collecting most of their points at this venue. Recent head-to-heads have been tight, with five of the last eight meetings ending in draws and both teams scoring in most encounters. While Cruz Azul’s defence has been leaky, their attack is strong, making BTTS and a possible draw likely outcomes.

Tigres vs Cruz Azul Predictions

Tigres hosts Cruz Azul at Estadio Universitario in Saturday's Liga MX Apertura contest.

Cruz Azul are in better form, but Tigres are usually a tough side to beat at Estadio Universitario.

BTTS is my first choice, while I also fancy a share of the points.

Even Encounter on the Cards

  • Tigres have seen BTTS in 3 of their last 5 matches
  • Tigres drew 5 of their last 10 matches
  • Tigres drew 5 of their last 8 matches against Cruz Azul
  • Cruz Azul have seen BTTS in 7 of their last 8 matches against Tigres
  • Cruz Azul have seen BTTS in 5 of their last 6 matches

Tight Record in Recent H2H

Tigres and Cruz Azul have met on 20 occasions since 2020. Cruz Azul claimed seven victories, while Tigres picked up six wins. Seven games finished deadlocked.

Five of their eight most recent encounters, including each of their last three contests at Estadio Universitario, finished as 1-1 draws.

Tigres Struggling for Results

Tigres come into this weekend's Liga MX encounter looking to bounce back from a dismal 3-0 defeat at Pachuca last weekend.

Salomon Rondon scored either side of half-time before Kenedy added a third in the second period. Alan Franco was sent off in the closing stages to compound a miserable evening for the visitors.

Victor Vucetich's side offered little in attack, managing just ten shots to Pachuca's 21 with only two efforts on target.

Final xG totals also reflected Pachuca's superiority. The home side recorded a 2.70 xG total, with Tigres mustering only 0.43.

A poor run of results has seen Tigres fail to win any of their last four Liga MX matches. Over a longer period, they have picked up just two wins in ten games since the end of August.

While in dreadful away form, Tigres have remained difficult to beat at Estadio Universitario (UANL). Vucetich's men won three and lost only one of six Liga MX fixtures this season.

Eleven of the hosts' 15 Liga MX points have been collected at this venue.

Cruz Azul Looking for Fifth Straight Victory

Cruz Azul head to Monterrey with plenty of confidence after a 2-1 home win against Leon last weekend.

Andres Montano broke the deadlock from the penalty spot in the 56th minute before Jose Paradela doubled the hosts' advantage.

Jose Alvarado pulled a goal back with a stoppage-time penalty, but Cruz Azul held on for a hard-fought victory.

Both sides created plenty of chances in an evenly matched Liga MX contest. Leon enjoyed slightly more possession (52%-48%) and registered a higher xG total (2.09-1.53).

La Maquina have now won each of their last four matches after back-to-back 3-3 draws against Pumas and Toluca.

While in excellent form, clean sheets have been rare for Joel Huiqui's side. Cruz Azul conceded at least one goal in 13 of their last 15 fixtures.

Fifteen games into the Apertura, Huiqui's men sit third in the division, behind league leaders Club America on goal difference only.

Tigres vs Cruz Azul Team News

Tigres: (4-2-3-1) Nahuel Guzman; Jesus Garza, Rafael Guerrero, Cesar Araujo, Mauro Lainez; Fernando Gorriaran, Emiliano Gomez; Diego Lainez, Juan Brunetta, Diego Sanchez; Guillermo Martinez.

Tigres head coach Victor Vucetich will be forced into at least one change to his first XI.

Alan Franco is suspended following his red card at Pachuca, while Marcelo Flores, Jesus Angulo and Francisco Reyes remain sidelined.

Marco Farfan and Osvaldo Rodriguez face late fitness tests, while Joaquim and Romulo have returned to training and could feature this weekend.

Cruz Azul: (5-4-1) Kevin Mier; Rogelio Gonzalez, Amaury Garcia, Gonzalo Piovi, Jesus Orozco, Omar Campos; Agustin Palavecino, Erik Lira, Andres Montano, Carlos Rodriguez; Gabriel Fernandez.

Cruz Azul interim boss Joel Huiqui is unlikely to make wholesale changes after four successive league wins.

Jose Paradela is in contention to earn a recall after returning from injury to score as a substitute against Leon.

Amaury Morales and Mateo Levy remain sidelined with long-term knee injuries, while Willer Ditta will be assessed closer to kick-off.

Verdict

Recent results and past encounters between these sides point towards a competitive Liga MX encounter this weekend.

I have my first stake on BTTS, while I also fancy a draw at Estadio Universitario.
