In the upcoming Europa League fixture, Portugal is anticipated to secure a victory against the United States, especially after the latter's recent 5-2 defeat to Belgium. Portugal's squad remains strong and is expected to make strategic changes, with key players like João Neves and Vitinha likely to feature prominently. Meanwhile, the US faces defensive challenges which could be exploited by Portugal’s attacking lineup. This matchup in Atlanta promises a compelling narrative, with Portugal striving to capitalize on their impressive recent form.

United States rarely keep clean sheets and conceded five goals against Belgium. I expect Roberto Martinez to pick a strong side here, Portugal backed to win in Atlanta.

HTH - Two Competitive Clashes

United States have faced Portugal seven times, two of those in competitive matches.

USA beat Portugal 3-2 at the 2002 World Cup before a 2-2 draw at the 2014 World Cup in South Africa.

USA Humbled by Belgium

United States ended 2025 by winning three friendlies on home soil. Haji Wright scored both goals in a 2-1 victory over Australia and Giovannia Reyna netted first in a 2-1 win against Paraguay.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side had an incredible start against Uruguay, getting out to a 4-0 lead before half-time. They ended up winning 5-1, an unlikely score after registering 0.74-0.59 expected goals.

USA rarely keep clean sheets and that was apparent against Belgium on Saturday. Weston McKennie opened the scoring in Atlanta but they ended up losing 5-2, centre-backs Tim Ream and Mark McKenzie struggling against the Europeans.

Goalkeepers: Matt Turner, Matt Freese, Chris Brady, Patrick Schulte

Roman Celentano withdrew from the squad with Patrick Schulte called up. Sergino Dest, Haji Wright and Diego Luna missed out, Tyler Adams and Alejandro Zendejas injured.

Defenders Chris Richards and Miles Robinson are in the squad but unlikely to feature. Joe Scally, Ricardo Pepi and Patrick Agyemang will be hoping to start.

Portugal Couldn't Find the Net in Mexico

Portugal qualified for the World Cup in November, doing so in style. They thrashed Armenia 9-1 in Porto, João Neves and Bruno Fernandes both netting hat-tricks.

The Selecao struggled to break down Mexico on Saturday, the game ending in a 0-0 draw at Estadio Azteca. Gonçalo Ramos hit the post in the first half as Roberto Martinez made seven substitutions at half-time.

Squad & Team News

Goalkeepers: José Sá, Rui Silva, Ricardo Velho
Defenders: João Cancelo, Nuno Mendes, Diogo Dalot, Gonçalo Inácio, António Silva, Renato Veiga, Tomás Araújo
Midfielders: Bruno Fernandes, Rúben Neves, Vitinha, João Neves, Matheus Nunes, Samú Costa, Mateus Fernandes
Forwards: João Félix, Gonçalo Guedes, Gonçalo Ramos, Pedro Neto, Francisco Trincão, Francisco Conceição, Ricardo Horta, Pedro Gonçalves, Paulinho

Diogo Costa, Rafael Leão, Rodrigo Mora and Cristiano Ronaldo are all absent. Rúben Dias, Nélson Semedo, Bernardo Silva and João Palhinha missed out due to injury.

Expect Martinez to make changes here with José Sá, Tomás Araújo, João Cancelo and Vitinha expected to start.

João Neves was absent from training on Monday and unlikely be in the squad in Atlanta.

Predicted Lineups

USA (4-2-3-1) Matt Turner; Joe Scally, Tim Ream, Mark McKenzie, Antonee Robinson; Johnny Cardoso, Tanner Tessmann; Weston McKennie, Malik Tillman, Christian Pulisic; Patrick Agyemang

Portugal (4-2-3-1) José Sá; Diogo Dalot, Tomás Araújo, Gonçalo Inácio, João Cancelo; Vitinha, João Neves; Pedro Neto, Bruno Fernandes, Ricardo Horta; Paulinho

Verdict

USA are coming off a 5-2 loss against Belgium and Portugal will present similar challenges. Roberto Martinez should start Vitinha and João Neves in midfield here, the visitors to emerge victorious in Atlanta.
