Monfils Approaching Retirement
Gael Monfils lost eight of his final nine matches last year and that form has continued in 2026. He went out in the first round in Auckland and the Australian Open.
The 39-year-old is under little pressure after announcing that this will be his final year on tour. In October he said: “I had a racket in my hands for the first time at two and a half, and began playing professionally at 18.
“Now, after celebrating my 39th birthday just a month ago, I’d like to share that the year ahead will be my last as a professional tennis player.”
The Frenchman beat Damir Dzumhur in Acapulco but was no match for Valentin Vacherot, going down 6-3 6-3 in 68 minutes.
Monfils took advantage of a soft draw in Indian Wells, defeating World No.219 Alexis Galarneau 6-3 6-4.
Auger Aliassime 12-4 This Year
Felix Auger Aliassime suffered an unfortunate injury in the Australian Open first round but immediately won the title in Montpellier. His serve was broken only once in France.
The Canadian was serving strong again in Rotterdam, saving all four break points on his way to the final. He disappointed in the showpiece, going down 6-3 6-2 to Alex de Minaur after winning 30% of his 2nd serves.
It was a similar theme in Dubai, the 25-year-old broken once in straight sets wins over Zhizhen Zhang, Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard and Jiri Lehecka. He met Daniil Medvedev in the semi-finals, winning 40% of his 2nd serves in a 6-4 6-2 defeat.
Verdict
Gael Monfils is approaching retirement and the 39-year-old is not expected to threaten Top 10 players. Felix Auger Aliassime has won 12 matches this year, 11 of those victories coming in straight sets.
