Azerbaijan Thriving on Home Soil
Azerbaijan are very close to clinching a spot in the EuroVolley 2026 Round of 16 after starting the tournament with back-to-back victories, losing only one set.
They had certain problems in the first round against underdogs Portugal, but ultimately got away with all three points with a 3-1 victory, while cruising past Spain 3-0 yesterday in front of an electric Baku crowd.
Azerbaijan competed in the European League this season but were nowhere close to contesting promotion, finishing in 12th place with a 3-3 record.
Romania Showing Plenty of Fight
Romania were given minimal chances of upsetting the Netherlands in their EuroVolley 2026 opening match on Saturday but offered strong resistance, forcing a tiebreaker and losing 3-2.
The Tricolours had a solid run in the European Golden League this season, with four victories in six games enough for 9th place. They played two pre-tournament friendlies against the Czech Republic and lost on both occasions, 4-0 and 3-2.
In the previous European Championship three years ago, Romania reached the playoffs but were stopped by France 3-1 in the Round of 16 to finish 11th.
