Match Preview
Italy earned a statement win in their EuroVolley 2026 opening clash yesterday. On paper, they should have an equally easy job against inexperienced Montenegro.
Azzurri Make a Dominant Start
Italy started the tournament yesterday in dominant fashion, cruising past Croatia 3-0 in sets while allowing just nine points to the opposition in the opening set.
They were among the main candidates to go all the way at EuroVolley 2023, but were stopped by eventual winners Turkey 3-2 in the semi-finals and ultimately lost the bronze medal match against the Netherlands 3-0.
Italy's biggest accomplishments recently were the gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics, their first-ever Olympic gold, and bronze medal in the Nations League 2026 in late July.
Last week, Azzurri claimed back-to-back wins against Ukraine 3-1 and Poland 3-0 in preparation matches.
Montenegro Face Another Major Test
Led by experienced coach Jovo Cakovic, Montenegro qualified for EuroVolley for the first time in the nation's history.
They also looked great in preparation matches for this tournament, beating Austria 3-1 in early August, followed by back-to-back victories against Portugal, 3-0 and 3-2.
However, their performance in the opening round against one of the co-hosts, Sweden, was quite disappointing, losing in straight sets while scoring just 54 points in total.
