Match Preview
The last time these two sides locked horns was in August 2019 at EuroVolley, where Belgium claimed a 3-1 victory. A lot has changed since then, especially for Portugal, who have improved by a couple of levels.
Portugal Showing Promise on Debut
This is the first EuroVolley appearance for Portugal in the nation's history, while their biggest accomplishment so far is a very modest CEV Silver European League title in 2024.
They had a couple of good sequences in the opening round against one of the co-hosts, Azerbaijan, taking a big advantage in the 3rd set to lead 2-1, but ultimately lost the encounter 3-1.
Portugal played in the European League this season, finishing mid-table with a 2-4 record, while losing both of their pre-tournament friendlies to Montenegro, 3-0 and 3-2.
Belgium Survive Five-Set Battle
Belgium were tagged massive favorites in their tournament-opening match against Spain on Saturday, but barely saved their skin, forcing a tiebreak and getting away with a 3-2 victory.
The Yellow Tigers also hit a rough patch in the last couple of Volleyball Nations League 2026 rounds, losing three games in a row and finishing 13th with a 4-8 overall record.
They scheduled two pre-tournament friendlies against Hungary and claimed two victories without dropping a single set.
