Despite criticisms, Panathinaikos have shown strong effort throughout the finals series, particularly in their Game 2 victory over Olympiakos at OAKA. While star player Kendrick Nunn has yet to deliver a standout performance, the Greens’ determination is clear. The analysis points to Panathinaikos responding strongly and pushing the series to a decisive Game 5, with the potential for an even more intense matchup ahead.

Match Preview

Olympiakos moved within one victory of the Basket League title after a high-scoring Game 3 win on Monday. Panathinaikos now face a must-win situation in front of their home crowd, where they already proved in Game 2 they can trouble their eternal rivals.

Panathinaikos Looking to Force a Decider

Lack of aggression was the main reason behind Panathinaikos’ 82-76 defeat in Game 1, earning just five free throws in the entire match. Rebounding was also a major issue, with the Greens losing that battle 47-23.

Forcing 14 turnovers while committing just seven themselves put PAO in a strong position in Game 2, which they won 68-58 despite shooting only 41% from the field. Nigel Hayes-Davis finally delivered one of his best performances of the series, scoring 23 points and shooting 5/8 from beyond the arc.

They couldn’t contain Olympiakos offensively in Game 3 though, losing the rebounding battle 34-23 which ultimately led to a 102-92 defeat on Monday. Panathinaikos still shot an impressive 56% from the field, with Jerian Grant topping the scoring charts with 19 points.

Olympiakos Closing In on the Title

Olympiakos made a strong start to the finals, taking a 12-point lead into halftime before securing an 82-76 victory in Game 1. Evan Fournier was the top scorer with 20 points, while Nikola Milutinov recorded a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Their shooting was disastrous in Game 2 at OAKA, converting just 20 of 51 field-goal attempts in a deserved 68-58 defeat, arguably their worst performance of 2026. Fournier once again led the scoring with 15 points while adding seven rebounds and seven assists.

The reigning European champions responded in style on Monday, winning Game 3 at home 102-92 to regain control of the series. Fournier delivered an outstanding performance with 28 points, while EuroLeague MVP Sasha Vezenkov added 24.

Verdict

Panathinaikos can be criticised for some aspects of this series, but not for their effort. They already showed in Game 2 that they can beat Olympiakos at OAKA, while Kendrick Nunn is still yet to deliver a truly dominant performance in these finals. I expect the Greens to respond and force a deciding Game 5.
