The Czech Republic faces significant challenges as they compete without veterans Jan Vesely and Tomas Satoransky, making them a much less competitive team. Sweden, on the other hand, cannot afford any missteps; a loss would end their hopes in the tournament. With this urgency, Sweden is expected to perform strongly and justify their position as favorites in this crucial matchup. All indications point to a must-win scenario for Sweden, given the weakened Czech lineup.

Match Preview

This Group H clash sees Sweden host the Czech Republic, with the hosts needing a victory to keep their qualification hopes alive, while the visitors are expected to struggle without key players.

Sweden Fighting to Stay in Contention

Sweden’s results and performances have been far from ideal in the FIBA World Cup 2027 qualifiers but they still hold a chance to advance, currently sitting in last place in Group H with a 1-3 record.

They were nowhere close to forcing an upset in the opening three rounds, recording back-to-back defeats against the Czech Republic 97-80 on the road, plus home defeats to Slovenia 94-83 and Estonia 88-77.

What kept them in the race was a somewhat unexpected 79-69 road victory against Estonia in early March, winning the last quarter 28-14 to complete the comeback. Ludde Hakanson was named man of the match with 18 points.

Czech Republic Weakened in the Last Two Rounds

The Czech Republic had a great start to this qualifying campaign, beating Sweden 97-80 in front of the home crowd in late November, then justifying the role of slight favorites in Tallinn against Estonia 97-92, where veteran Tomas Satoransky did a sensational job with 18 points and 16 assists.

After getting crushed by Slovenia 99-59 in the third round, the Czechs hosted the same opponent in Jihlava in early March, held a huge 18-point advantage at half time but then stopped scoring and lost 86-84.

Tomas Kyzlink was their top performer this time with 22 points, followed by Satoransky, who contributed 15 points and nine assists, but he is not available for the upcoming matches.

Verdict

Without veterans Jan Vesely and Tomas Satoransky, the Czech Republic are a completely different team who would struggle to beat anyone. Sweden have no room for error, needing a win to stay in the race, so I expect them to justify the role of favorites.
