Premier League Darts History

Premier League Darts began on 20 January 2005, originally starting as a fortnightly fixture and featuring seven players. Previous sponsors include McCoy's, Holsten, Whyte and Mackay, 888.com and the current sponsor Unibet.

The Premier League Darts prize money increased from £265,000 to £340,000 in 2008. The prize money increased to £855,000 in 2017 through to 2020 with the winner receiving £250,000. It has been £1,000,000 since 2022.

Phil Taylor won six of the thirteen tournaments he appeared in, going unbeaten throughout the first three seasons and winning the first four. James Wade defeated Mervyn King 13-8 in the 2009 final to break Phil Taylor’s dominance.

Taylor won again in 2010 but was defeated in the semi-finals in the 2011 tournament, won by Gary Anderson in his debut season. Phil Taylor reclaimed the title in 2012 which was his seventh and final title. Taylor reached the semifinals in 2013 and 2016.

Michael van Gerwen took over as the dominant player in Premier League Darts after beating Taylor 10-8 in the 2013 final.

Raymond van Barneveld won in 2014 and Gary Anderson won his second title in 2015, but Van Gerwen won four straight from 2016-2019. MVG won again in 2022 and 2023 to become the most successful in Premier League history with seven wins.

Glen Durrant defeated Nathan Aspinall 11-8 in the 2020 Premier League Darts final and was crowned champion in his debut year in the Premier League

Premier League Darts expanded to feature nine main players and nine wild cards that compete in 16 rounds before the Play-offs.

However, for 2021 the tournament reverted to a 10-player format due to coronavirus restrictions with the entire Premier League taking place at Marshall Arena in Milton Keynes. Jonny Clayton was crowned champion of the short-fire tournament.

In 2022, the Premier League moved back to Thursday night slots with eight players featuring at events staged across UK, Ireland, Germany and the Netherlands. Van Gerwen won that year, and again in 2023.
