Al Ahli and Johor DT are set for a thrilling AFC Elite quarter-final matchup. While Al Ahli recently edged out a win against Al Duhail with a late goal, Johor DT arrives from a draw that snapped their impressive winning streak. The match sees the two teams meeting for the first time, with Al Ahli's home advantage and solid recent performances tipping the scales in their favor. Predicted lineups suggest strong, competitive sides with key players like Riyad Mahrez for Al Ahli and Bergson for Johor leading the charge.

Al Ahli vs Johor DT Predictions

Johor DT should not be underestimated, but they are likely to fall short in Friday's AFC Elite quarter-final tie. I have my money on the hosts to secure a narrow win in Jeddah.

Al Ahli Tipped to Edge to Victory

  • Al Ahli won 8 of their last 11 matches
  • Al Alhi have seen under 2.5 goals in 3 of their last 4 matches
  • JDT lost 4 of their last 5 away matches (AFC Elite)

Al Ahli and Johor DT Set For First Encounter

Al Ahli and Johor DT will meet for the first time on Friday.

Al Ahli Edge Past Al Duhail

Al Ahli secured their place in Friday's AFC Elite quarter-final tie with a narrow 1-0 win against Al Duhail earlier this week. After a goalless 90 minutes, and with the tie seemingly heading for penalties, Riyad Mahrez's 117th-minute goal sealed a dramatic late victory for the reigning AFC champions.

In a competitive contest, the Saudis eventually showed their class, with 21 shots and a 2.09 xG underlining the deserved nature of their win. Al Duhail had their moments but fell short, with 12 attempts yielding just 0.8 xG.

Matthias Jaissle's side have not been at their best in recent weeks. Al Ahli failed to win four of their last five games, having previously claimed victories in six successive fixtures.

While usually reliable in front of goal, the Saudis have struggled to find attacking fluidity in recent results. The Royal failed to score more than one goal in five of their last eight matches.

Johor DT Winning Run Broken

Johor Darul Ta'zim arrive in Saudi Arabia after a 1-1 draw against TFC in the Malaysian Super League last week.

Top scorer Bergson opened the scoring for Xisco's side before Ekhson Pandzhshanbe's goal secured a surprise share of the spoils at Sultan Ibrahim Stadium.

Despite dominating proceedings, the Malaysian champions were unable to find a winner. JDT had 24 shots and a final xG of 1.44 but saw their remarkable winning run halted.

Impressively, Johor DT have won 68 of their last 71 Super League fixtures, including all 20 league matches this season. Remarkably, they have not lost a domestic league game since 2021.

Xisco's tough-to-beat side secured their place in the AFC Elite quarter-finals with a superb 3-2 aggregate victory against J1L opponents Sanfrecce Hiroshima.

Predicted Lineups and Team News

Al Ahli (4-2-3-1) Edouard Mendy; Mohammed Abdulrahman, Rayan Hamed, Roger Ibanez, Zakaria Hawsawi; Franck Kessie, Ziyad Aljohani; Riyad Mahrez, Enzo Millot, Galeno; Ivan Toney.

Al Ahli boss Jaissle could make a couple of changes to his first XI after a gruelling victory earlier this week. Ali Majrashi and Matheus Gonçalves are both pushing to come in, with Mohammed Abdulrahman and Enzo Millot the most likely to make way.

The Saudi Pro League side have no new injury issues this week. Ivan Toney should continue to lead the line despite an ineffective display against Al Duhail.

Johor DT (4-1-3-2) Syihan Hazmi; Matthew Davies, Eddy Israfilov, Antonio Cristian, La'Vere Corbin-Ong; Nacho Mendez; Teto Martín, Ager Aketxe, Afiq Fazail; Manuel Hidalgo, Bergson.

JDT boss Munoz is unable to call on two first-team players this week. Enzo Lombardo and Arif Aiman are both ruled out for the Malaysian champions.

In-form forward Bergson will spearhead the Johor attack on Friday. The Brazilian has scored 22 goals in 29 appearances this season.

Verdict

Al Ahli should edge to victory in a competitive and hard-fought AFC Elite encounter. I have the Saudi's to claim a low-scoring win on Friday.
