Arsenal's 2-1 loss to Bournemouth highlights growing concerns about their ability to perform under pressure, especially as their Premier League lead dwindles with Manchester City in close pursuit. The Gunners face critical matches in the coming weeks, starting with a decisive Champions League clash against Sporting CP, where they hold a narrow lead from the first leg. Arsenal's potential to secure the Premier League title also depends on their performance against Manchester City, a team known for late-season comebacks. Recent seasons show Arsenal's consistent yet often unrewarded efforts, intensifying the spotlight on the current campaign.

Arsenal's 2-1 defeat to Bournemouth at the Emirates has raised concerns about their ability to handle pressure. The question now being asked is whether Mikel Arteta’s side can hold their nerve.

The Gunners' lead at the top of the Premier League table has been trimmed to six points with Manchester City waiting to pounce. City have a game in hand, making the upcoming clash at the Etihad the defining game of the season.

Arteta can't look too far ahead due to a crucial Champions League quarter-final clash on Wednesday. Arsenal welcome Sporting Clube de Portugal to the Emirates after earning a 1-0 lead in the first leg last week.

Arsenal’s European form remains their strongest suit. After winning all eight games in the league phase, a 1-1 draw against Bayer Leverkusen in the round of 16 first leg was followed by a comfortable 2-0 win at the Emirates.

David Raya kept Mikel Arteta’s side in the contest in the quarter-final first leg in Portugal last week. Kai Havertz’s late goal snatched all three points but the tie is far from over.

The manager issued a rallying call before the clash: "Pure fire, that's what I want to see from the players, the people, myself. The opportunity is unbelievable. Let's confront it, let's go for it and put everything into it."

Arsenal remain favourites but have been joined by Bayern Munich with PSG not far behind. If the Gunners survive the Sporting test, their semi-final opponents will be Barcelona or Atletico Madrid.

Manchester City vs Arsenal

Arsenal recently lost 2-0 against Manchester City in the League Cup final and followed up with a 2-1 FA Cup defeat at Championship side Southampton. The 2-1 loss to Bournemouth has further dented their confidence.

The Gunners are unfancied in the late game at the Etihad on Sunday. Pep Guardiola's side are famous for finding their stride at the tail end of the season and have won three straight against Arsenal (2-0), Liverpool (4-0) and Chelsea (3-0).

There are only two teams with a realistic chance of winning the title. Arsenal remain the favourites, but a loss at Man City on Sunday could see those odds change in a hurry.

Expert Opinion

Former Premier League striker Chris Sutton believes Mikel Arteta's job is on the line with Arsenal fans desperate to claim silverware this season.

"I do think he has a problem if he doesn't get them over the line in the Premier League or Champions League. It will change the landscape in which the Arsenal fans view him because he has been there long enough.

"I don't think Arsenal have bottled it and if they do end up losing (the Premier League) it is because Manchester City are a good side with quality.

"But the Arsenal fans will view it differently and if he doesn't have the support of the fans then a decision will need to be made, so I do think it is make or break for him. They have to win the Premier League or Champions League or he will be a gonner."

Verdict

Arsenal were the best team in the Champions League but the contenders are coming to the fore, most notably Bayern Munich and PSG who are likely to meet in the semi-finals.

I don't see the Gunners beating either of those teams if they reach the final in Istanbul.

The value on Arsenal winning the Premier League has shifted with the pressure of being the hunted clearly visible. I am expecting a defeat at the Etihad which could see Man City take over as the favourites.
