Tottenham are eager to bounce back after a heavy defeat to Brentford and will face Charlton in the EFL Cup. Despite some injury issues, Spurs' depth and attacking quality should be enough to overcome a Charlton side that struggles defensively but scores frequently themselves. Expect a high-scoring game, with the recommended bet being Tottenham to win and over 2.5 goals. Predicted lineups include several absentees for both sides, but Spurs' historical dominance over Charlton adds to their appeal.

Tottenham vs Charlton Preview

Tottenham will want to bounce back from an opening-day defeat against Brentford. Charlton concede a lot and there’s value on a Spurs win and goals in the EFL Cup.

Key Stats - Plenty of Recent Goals

  • Tottenham have won 5 of their last 9 games.
  • Tottenham have seen over 2.5 goals in 3 consecutive matches.
  • Charlton have seen over 2.5 goals in their last 4 games.

H2H - Spurs Dominate

Tottenham have a 29-16 advantage against Charlton, alongside 10 draws.

Tottenham Aiming to Bounce Back

Roberto De Zerbi’s Tottenham are tough to beat and are unbeaten in 12 of their previous 14 in all competitions.

Spurs also avoided defeat in all of their seven pre-season friendlies, winning four. Victories came against MK Dons 1-0, Auckland 2-0, Chelsea 2-1 and Hoffenheim 3-0.

The North Londoners couldn’t carry momentum into the new season and lost 3-0 at Brentford on Saturday. Tottenham trailed 2-0 in the first half, allowed 3.88 XG and shipped a third goal in the 49th minute.

Charlton Struggling for Clean Sheets

Charlton are a high-scoring side and have seen 17 total goals in their last six fixtures. The Addicks have kept just one clean sheet and conceded eight in that period.

Nathan Jones’ team ended pre-season with a 3-0 away defeat against League One side Reading. They responded with a 3-1 EFL Cup win against Cheltenham and a 2-1 home triumph over Derby.

The south London team also beat West Ham 2-1 away in the Championship. Charlton faced 25 shots and Lloyd Jones and Tyreece Campbell scored on the counter-attack.

Predicted Starting Lineups & Team News

Tottenham (4-2-3-1): Martin Dubravka; Archie Gray, Jan Paul Van Hecke, Kevin Danso, Destiny Udogie; Mateus Fernandes, Rodrigo Bentancur; Mikey Moore, Lucas Bergvall, Mathys Tel; Dominic Solanke

Defensive duo Micky van de Ven and Pedro Porro are sidelined with injuries.

Attackers Mohammed Kudus and Wilson Odobert and midfielers Dejan Kulusevski and Xavi Simons are ruled out.

Pape Matar Sarr and James Maddison are injury doubts. Roberto De Zerbi explained that Sarr missed the Brentford game with a hamstring issue and was cautious over his return, saying:

“He felt pain in his hamstring two days ago. Nothing important, but we don’t take risk with him and especially in this moment."

Charlton (4-4-1-1): Thomas Kaminski; Joe Rankin-Costello, Lloyd Jones, Reece Burke, Amari'i Bell; Nathaniel Chalobah, Conor Coventry; Tyreece Campbell, Sonny Carey, Karlan Grant; Miles Leaburn

Midfielder Timothy Ouma is lacking match fitness and is unlikely to feature against Tottenham. Defender Kayne Ramsay is also ruled out due to injury.

Attacker Charlie Kelman is unavailable after dislocating his shoulder in pre-season.

Verdict

Tottenham will seek a big response to the Brentford defeat and Spurs have depth in their ranks. Charlton have seen a lot of high-scoring results recently and a home win with over 2.5 goals is the best bet.
