Italy Struggling in Attack
Italy returned to the top division after finishing 2nd in the World Championship Division I last season, behind Great Britain and ahead of Ukraine, Japan, Poland and Romania.
Their warm-up results ahead of the tournament were inconsistent, as they faced Great Britain four consecutive times between late April and mid-May. Italy lost twice by scores of 4-1 and 5-3 but also recorded victories of 6-4 and 2-0.
Italy offered very little offensively in their opening match at the 2026 World Championship, suffering a heavy 6-0 defeat against Canada while registering just 19 shots on goal.
Slovakia Looking for Improvement
Slovakia endured a disappointing campaign at the 2025 Ice Hockey World Championship, finishing the group stage with only seven points in Group A after recording two wins and five defeats.
Their warm-up form was also poor for a stretch, as they suffered four consecutive defeats against Switzerland 5-3, Germany 3-1 twice and Latvia 5-1 between mid-April and early May.
However, Slovakia improved in their most recent friendlies with victories against Latvia 5-2 and Denmark 4-2, although they also lost 3-0 to Denmark between those results.
The Slovaks were not particularly convincing in their tournament opener either, but still did enough to defeat Norway 2-1. Kristian Pospisil opened the scoring, while Marek Hrivik netted the winning goal in the final period.
