UEFA requests European Leagues for a decision on domestic seasons

  • European football governing body has requested a decision by 25 May
  • Eredivisie & Ligue 1 have been cancelled
UEFA Champions League

European football leagues have until 25 May to tell UEFA if they intend to complete or cancel their seasons.

Football has been suspended in all European countries apart from Belarus because of the coronavirus pandemic. The Turkish Super Lig and Russian Premier League were the last two major leagues to be suspended.

The English Premier League recently stepped up its plans to resume the season. The project has been labelled 'Project Restart'.

Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Brighton & Hove Albion and West Ham have opened their training grounds to players for individual training.

The EPL is hopeful of resuming the 2019-20 season on 8 June and to be completed by the end of July. That would enable the Premier League to fit in with UEFA's European competition plans.

English Premier League clubs will meet on Friday to discuss options for a potential restart.

Professional Footballers' Association deputy chief executive Bobby Barnes said: "We have been assured of the intentions of all that there would be no resumption unless guarantees of safety could be given to the players.

"The overriding principle for all parties is the health and safety of all participants on and off the field, and of course the wider public."

The Scottish Premiership is suspended indefinitely and their season could also be declared over. The Scottish second, third and fourth tiers have already announced their seasons have been cancelled.

On Tuesday, French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe said the 2019-20 Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 seasons were over. All sporting events in France have been banned until September, even those without spectators.

The Eredivisie was abandoned on Friday with no promotion relegation or champions. Belgian clubs will vote on the cancellation of their top flight next week.
