Azerbaijan had certain problems in the first round against underdogs Portugal, but ultimately got away with all three points with a 3-1 victory, while cruising past Spain 3-0 in front of an electric Baku crowd in the follow-up clash.

In the third round, the co-hosts almost wasted a 2-0 lead against Romania, waking up in the tiebreaker to win 15-8, while their first and only loss so far was registered on Wednesday against Belgium, 3-0.

Azerbaijan are currently third in Group C with eight points, and any type of victory today would push them up to second position.

Netherlands Looking to Bounce Back

The Netherlands struggled in the opening clash against Romania, ultimately winning a five-set thriller, then claimed two consecutive victories in straight sets against Portugal and Spain.

Yesterday, Oranje locked horns with another unbeaten team, Belgium, recovered from a two-set deficit to force a tiebreaker but ultimately lost 3-2 to their neighbouring rivals and are now forced to battle for second spot against Azerbaijan.

They recently participated in the Volleyball Nations League 2026 final tournament after finishing 7th in the regular season with a 7-5 record, but couldn't do much in the quarterfinals, losing to Italy in straight sets.

Verdict

Azerbaijan v Netherlands

Azerbaijan had just one big test so far in the tournament, where they were easily outclassed by Belgium. I don't see them doing a lot of damage to the Netherlands, so Oranje to win in a –11.5 point handicap is my top choice.
