Spain's chances of reaching the EuroVolley 2026 playoffs are not looking great after securing just one point in three rounds so far.

That sole point came in the opening match against heavy favorites Belgium, losing 3-2 in a tiebreaker, followed by back-to-back defeats against Azerbaijan 3-0 and the Netherlands 3-0, where they were nowhere close to contesting the opposition.

La Roja played a series of friendly games ahead of the tournament and had mixed results, losing to Slovakia 3-1 and 3-2, while beating Hungary 3-0 and 3-1.

Portugal Still Searching for First Point

Portugal's chances of reaching the EuroVolley 2026 elimination stage have been reduced significantly after losing all three encounters without winning a single point.

They had a couple of good sequences in the opening round against one of the co-hosts, Azerbaijan, taking a big advantage in the third set to lead 2-1, but ultimately lost the encounter 3-1.

Portugal were swept by favored Belgium in straight sets next, scoring just 49 points, while their efforts against the Netherlands were just slightly better yesterday, scoring 62 points in total but losing 3-0.

Both sides are unlikely to play a serious role in this tournament, but I give a slight advantage to Spain in this neighbouring derby. They won their last four H2H clashes against Portugal and performed slightly better in the opening rounds.
