The New Zealand Breakers, with a commendable home record against the Cairns Taipans, are gearing up for a high-scoring finish to the NBL season. Having won 8 of their last 9 encounters with the Taipans, the Breakers look to maintain momentum despite a season marred by inconsistency and a missed postseason opportunity. Meanwhile, the Taipans exhibit potential but tend to falter in clutch moments. Key player Jack McVeigh stands out, especially with his three-point prowess. As the teams prepare to conclude, fans anticipate an exciting showdown.

New Zealand Breakers vs Cairns Taipans Preview

New Zealand have a good record against Cairns and can sign off the NBL season with a win at home. I like over the match total of 183.5 happening as it has hit in all three matches between these two teams this season.

  • New Zealand have won 8 of their last 9 games against Cairns.
  • The Breakers have won 2 of their last 3 matches in New Zealand.
  • The last 4 games between New Zealand and Cairns have gone over the match total
  • Jack McVeigh has had 3+ threes in 5 of his last 8 games.

New Zealand Breakers Eliminated Before Finals

A 18-33 final quarter against Adelaide officially ended any hope of New Zealand returning to the NBL Finals, throwing away their chance of a postseason appearance after leading by 12 points at the final break.

The 92-89 loss to the 36ers put a stamp on what has been a difficult season for the Breakers, who have failed to find their identity in a season that has been marked by inconsistency.

On their day the Breakers could compete with anyone in the league, however, shooting has been a major problem, hitting at well over 50% from the field in one match to basically firing with their eyes closed the following night.

With Parker Jackson-Cartwright locked in for NBL27 and not much more, we are expecting to see another full restructure in New Zealand heading into next season.

Cairns Taipans' Long Season Almost Over

Cairns went within inches of beating Melbourne United in Round 21, but the familiar story played out once again, throwing away the result in the final quarter being outscored by 8 points and losing 89-85.

Up by six at the half, the Taipans looked the better team for the most part, Jack McVeigh came alive in the second quarter and finished the game with 25 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists, a day after extending his contract through NBL27.

But once again a Taipans collapse with a lack of clutch players as assist-king Andrew Andrews turned the ball over on the final two Cairns possessions.

The positive front he weekend was as mentioned, the resigning of McVeigh who will be the first building block in what will be a long offseason in North Queensland.

Verdict

New Zealand will cover the short line against Cairns in a high-scoring contest. Jack McVeigh 3+ threes is the safest prop bet.
