Germany's performance in the build-up to EuroBasket 2025 has been lackluster, suffering losses in every friendly match played in August. Despite a decent run in last year's tournament, their current form raises concerns for this opening round. In contrast, Spain appears poised to capitalize on Germany’s struggles. The key takeaway: Spain is favored to secure the points, given recent trends. If you're betting or following the action, keep an eye on Spain’s strong position as the teams clash in this much-anticipated matchup.

Match Preview

Spain have won their last five head-to-head matches against Germany, with the most recent one being a 65-60 victory in mid-August in a friendly match. Now they are about to lock horns in the WC 2026 opening round in Berlin.

Spain Cruised Through the Qualifiers

Spain not making it to the previous World Championship in 2022 was the biggest shock ahead of the tournament, since they had won three medals in a row prior to that.

La Roja didn't have any problems in the global qualifiers in March, winning their first three appearances against New Zealand 99-50, Senegal 84-51 and Puerto Rico 91-52 to secure a spot in the final tournament.

Derby games against Italy and USA didn't end up so well, though. Against Azzurri, Spain had disastrous shooting and lost 68-56, while they offered solid resistance against the reigning champions, losing 84-70.

Germany Hoping Home Advantage Can Help

This is going to be just the second appearance at the FIBA World Championship for Germany, and like the previous time in 1998, they qualified automatically as the host nation.

Their expectations are high, though, especially since WNBA players Satou Sabally and Nyara Sabally joined the roster. This duo singlehandedly carried them to a 5th-place finish last year at EuroBasket.

Germany's results in pre-tournament friendlies were disastrous, though, losing to Belgium 85-60, Spain 65-60, Hungary 68-62 and, most recently, Turkey 63-62.

Verdict

Germany had a decent run in EuroBasket 2025, but something is off with their form this year, losing every single friendly match in August. I am backing Spain to take the points in this opening round.
