Monte have made it to Stage 3 of the Major, which is more than anyone expected. But their run has been a bit iffy, as Monte got lucky a couple of times en route to this point.

Standing on the other side of the arena are Aurora Gaming, who are unlikely to make it very far in Cologne, considering their middling results in the previous big events.

However, unlike Monte, Aurora have a lot of experience playing Tier-1 teams, suggesting that Monte should not offer them a hard challenge.

Aurora Gaming Are an Enigma

Aurora Gaming have featured in many S-Tier tournaments this season, and they’ve found some success. Notably, Aurora reached the grand final of ESL Pro League Season 23 and the semifinals of BLAST Open Spring.

Since then, they’ve placed fifth-sixth at DraculaN Season 6, seventh-eighth at IEM Rio, and fifth-eighth at PGL Astana. Those results do not inspire much confidence and prove that Aurora Gaming might not have what it takes to challenge the top teams.

On the other side, they’ve been competitive enough at the highest level to believe Aurora can handle tier-two squads like Monte.

May 13	PGL Astana 2026	The MongolZ	2-0 (W)

Monte Have Made It Further Than Expected

Monte have reached Stage 3 of the IEM Cologne Major, which is far above the initial expectations.

They managed a 3-2 record in Stage 2, beating BIG, Legacy, and paiN Gaming, while losing to G2 Esports and BetBoom Team. This run does not look terrible, as Monte have only lost to two teams who ended the stage 3-1, and they’ve even managed to take down Legacy, who are among the top-10 teams in the world.

That said, Monte have gotten lucky in some of the wins. They had no business beating Monte, and their win over paiN is widely considered a big upset. Monte could be better than expected, but they need to show more before I’ll believe it.

Date	Event	Opponent	Result
June 9	IEM Cologne Major 2026	paiN Gaming	2-0 (W)
June 8	IEM Cologne Major 2026	BetBoom Team	1-2 (L)
June 7	IEM Cologne Major 2026	Legacy	13-11 (W)
June 6	IEM Cologne Major 2026	G2 Esports	19-22 (L)
June 6	IEM Cologne Major 2026	BIG	13-8 (W)

Verdict

Aurora Gaming v Monte

Aurora Gaming are expected to win, and that sounds fair. Even though Monte have made it to Stage 3, they’ve not shown anything inspiring and their performances should not convince anyone that Monte have what it takes to challenge a tier-1 team.

Admittedly, Aurora Gaming are not among the main title contenders, and their form ahead of the Major wasn’t great. But they’re fundamentally a better team.
