Is The Premier League’s Weight In Europe Misplaced?
As UEFA's Round of 16 unfolds, optimism surrounding English clubs' chances in Europe's top competitions dims. Despite predictions that English clubs will secure trophies, only Aston Villa performed well, winning narrowly against Lille. Six teams faltered in the Champions League, highlighting that quantity doesn't necessarily equate to quality. Poor performances raise questions about the Premier League’s dominance. With most English clubs lacking home advantage in first legs, they face tough second legs. As Bayern Munich cruise forward, Premier League fatigue further complicates their quest, with Newcastle’s struggles underscoring this challenge.
- Only Aston Villa among English clubs won in Round of 16 first leg.
- Six English teams faltered in Champions League, raising doubts on dominance.
- Home advantage in next legs, crucial for Premier League teams.
As the Round of 16 brackets open up in each of Europe’s three club competitions, talk of an English monopoly has dominated the narrative in the build up to the latest round of midweek action. Nine clubs aiming for silverware. The belief that three will get their hands on a trophy in May.
If that is to be the case, then the Premier League’s representatives are going to have to up their game across next week’s respective second legs - Aston Villa are perhaps the exception after their narrow win in Lille.
Unai Emery’s men top of the class, with eight of their counterparts failing to get the better of European opposition since Tuesday. Six of those sides competing in the Champions League Round of 16, proof that perhaps quantity does not necessarily mean quality.
Those six sides made up 37.5% of the Champions League’s pool of teams remaining and from a pure probability perspective, you would be backing an English team in the outright market before May’s final in Budapest.
Lost The Passports
However, probability may not lead to possibility by the time next week’s Round of 16 ties are complete. Four of the six go into their returns from a losing position, Newcastle and Arsenal level in their respective ties with Barcelona and Bayer Leverkusen.
An off night for the Gunners and one that needed Kai Havertz to score from the spot to salvage a draw, the Magpies foiled from the same distance late on by Lamine Yamal. Heartbreak for Eddie Howe’s men in the dying seconds.
Tottenham’s woes continue after suffering a 5-2 defeat at the hands of Atletico Madrid, Chelsea falling to holders PSG by the same score. Manchester City humbled by Real Madrid at the Bernabeu, Liverpool still have life left in their tie with Galatasaray.
Interestingly of the six English teams that played in the Champions League in midweek, five were on the road. Does this highlight just how important home advantage truly is at this stage of the competition; can the Premier League’s cohort use it to theirs next week?
How many English clubs find safe passage to the last eight will also reframe the narrative as to how dominant this country is in European competition. If we drill down on just the Champions League (sorry Forest, Palace and Villa fans) six out of eight is not good.
At that point you would be looking at a last eight lineup of Bayern, Bodo/Glimt and the Premier League’s gang of six. Yes there would be all-English ties in the quarter-finals, the balance of power still very much in their hands.
Any scenario where fewer than three Premier League teams manage to make it to the last eight and you would argue that the Champions League has once again found its competitive balance when it matters most.
Put Your Feet Up
Remember, no English team has lifted the trophy since 2023, with Manchester City’s 1-0 win over Inter Milan serving as the recent pinnacle. Perhaps the league’s overall strength is actually its biggest weakness.
You only have to look at Bayern Munich’s ruthless display against Atalanta in midweek. A 6-1 win in Bergamo, they did not even need Harry Kane’s services in order to beat the Italian outfit – they certainly will not need him for the second leg.
Not only are Bayern cruising into the last eight, but they are also cruising towards another Bundesliga crown. A huge luxury when it comes to trying to conquer Europe for the first time since 2020, keeping everyone as fresh as possible for their Champions League exploits.
A luxury that the Premier League clubs simply do not have. Every encounter is nothing short of a battle for points. You only have to look at the strength of the widening mid-pack to see how hard it is to be consistent.
A point not lost on Newcastle who find themselves in the bottom half of the table. If they are to get back into Europe next season, it looks as if they are going to have to conquer Europe. Talk about doing it the hard way.
A hard way but not impossible, the stakes raised after their 1-1 draw at St James’ Park, the only side not to have home advantage in the second leg. However, they, like their five English counterparts may be showing signs of a drained battery at just the wrong time.
A Final Charge
The Magpies are the only of the six English sides to require a playoff in order to reach the Round of 16, the other five safely in the top eight of the league phase. The fact that neither of them had to play each other in their bid to earn automatic qualification should not be ignored.
That safety net arguably making the league phase top heavy in terms of Premier League sides. A team from the continent may have had to play two sides from that division - two of the tougher league phase matches handed out by UEFA.
Now though, you have not only the prospect of eventual all-English clashes the further into the competition we go but also those same clubs playing with a drained battery - something that will only worsen with each league skirmish they also have to contest.
Of course, there is one obvious point in all of this. Only one club, regardless of nationality can win the competition. It does not matter how many English clubs fancy their chances if Real Madrid win it for a 15th time or PSG keep hold of the trophy for a second successive year.
Because it is not really about what you do in the first eight matches of the competition, avoid the playoffs and it’s also not the six that follow. All that matters are the two teams in the final and if neither of them are flying the flag of the Premier League, European football is safe for another year.
