The team, trailing Barcelona by four points in La Liga, faces a critical Champions League encounter with Manchester City without injured stars Kylian Mbappé and Jude Bellingham. Real Madrid’s Identity Crisis - Can Arbeloa Survive?

The boos at the Santiago Bernabéu following Real Madrid’s shock 1-0 defeat against Getafe have signaled a full-blown crisis in the Spanish capital.

What was supposed to be a honeymoon period for Álvaro Arbeloa has rapidly devolved into a tactical and psychological battle for survival.

With Real Madrid trailing Barcelona by four points in La Liga and a monumental UEFA Champions League Round of 16 clash against Manchester City looming, the stakes have never been higher for the man who stepped into Xabi Alonso’s formidable shoes.

The Arbeloa Experiment - Under Pressure or Under Fire?

Álvaro Arbeloa inherited a squad in turmoil this January after Xabi Alonso was dismissed following a Super Cup loss to Barcelona. While Arbeloa initially steadied the ship, largely thanks to a prolific run by Kylian Mbappé, the wheels have come off in the last fortnight.

The Results

In their last four outings, Real Madrid navigated a tricky Champions League playoff against Benfica. The Portuguese club scored early in Madrid to square the tie, Vinicius Junior scoring late on to secure a spot in the next round.

Los Blancos have suffered back-to-back losses in La Liga, starting with a 2-1 defeat to Osasuna in Pamplona where they allowed 2.29 xG. The 1-0 home loss against Getafe was the first time Real had failed to score since early December.

The Tactical Void

Arbeloa has struggled to show he has the tactical acumen to succeed Alonso, Carlo Ancelotti and Zinedine Zidane. He reverted to a traditional 4-4-2 before changing to a more fluent 4-2-3-1 against Getafe.

The manager spoke after the defeat on Monday: "I think these are different matches, the one in Pamplona and today’s. Today, we struggled against a rival that defended very well, didn’t press either of our central defenders in their buildup.
"Maybe we needed to be much more aggressive in that first line, put more players in the final line, make many more runs, and be more aggressive on the wings.

"It’s true that we often rely on the ‘easy’ option, which is Vinicius, who has great dribbling ability, but we must be able to create threats on both sides and be a constant danger down both wings. That’s something we need to correct and improve."

Injuries to key players

Real Madrid’s current slump is directly tied to the absence of their two most influential players.

Kylian Mbappé

Real Madrid officially confirmed on March 2 that Mbappé is suffering from a sprain in the external ligament of his left knee. He has been managing discomfort since late 2025, but the pain became persistent during training ahead of the second leg against Benfica.

He is ruled out for the first leg against Manchester City on March 11 but there is a slim hope he could return for the second leg on March 17. Mbappé is currently in Paris working with French specialists under Real Madrid's supervision.
Both the club and player have opted for conservative treatment to avoid surgery, which would end his season and jeopardize his 2026 World Cup participation.

Mbappé has scored roughly 43% of Madrid’s goals this season (38 goals in 33 games). Without him, the attack lacks a focal point, leading to the toothless performances seen against Getafe.

Jude Bellingham

Bellingham was diagnosed with an injury to the semitendinosus muscle (hamstring) in his left leg following the match against Rayo Vallecano on February 1.

Initially expected back by early March, Bellingham reportedly suffered a recovery relapse this week. New estimates suggest he will be sidelined until April, effectively ruling him out of both legs against Manchester City.

Without Bellingham’s engine and late runs into the box, the transition from defense to attack has become sluggish. Arbeloa has struggled to find a replacement who provides the same physical presence.

Will Arbeloa finish the season?

Reports suggest that if Real Madrid fail to progress past Manchester City, president Florentino Pérez could pull the trigger before April.

When asked if he has improved the team since he replaced Alonso, Arbeloa said: "That’s not for me to evaluate."

Champions League - The Manchester City Shadow

The upcoming tie against Manchester City is being billed as the highlight of the Round of 16. Recent history does not favor the current Madrid side.

Earlier this season, Man City secured a 2-1 victory at the Bernabéu, proving they still possess the tactical discipline and weapons to beat the Spanish giants.
