Sunderland vs Chelsea Preview

Sunderland’s Premier League form is unconvincing and the Black Cats are rooted to the bottom of the table. Chelsea are picking up wins and can seal another victory at the Stadium of Light.

Key Stats - Blues Winning Games

  • Sunderland have lost 5 of their last 6 Premier League games.
  • Chelsea have won 3 of their last 4 Premier League games.

H2H - Chelsea Dominate

Chelsea have a 61-44 advantage against Sunderland, alongside 22 draws.

Sunderland Premier League Quality

Regis Le Bris is under pressure following Sunderland's poor Premier League form. The Black Cats are 20th in the table after taking just two points from their last seven games.

The north-east team lost four league matches in a row, including away defeats at Man City 5-3 and Bournemouth 2-0.

Sunderland ended that streak with a goalless home draw against Leeds before losing 3-1 at Coventry. Le Bris’ side were 3-0 down after 52 minutes in the Coventry defeat.

The Black Cats had a second consecutive loss on Thursday and were beaten 2-0 at home by Dinamo Zagreb. Sunderland conceded twice in the opening 39 minutes and allowed 1.48 XG.

Chelsea Targeting Momentum

Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea have climbed into the Premier League’s top form after more consistent recent form. The west Londoners have won three of their last four league games.

The Blues started their upturn with a 5-1 home victory against Bournemouth and a 2-0 victory at Everton. Alonso’s side then lost 2-0 at home against Tottenham.

Chelsea responded positively and beat Man United 2-0 last time out. Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer scored in the second period and the Blues were on top with 3-1.24 XG.

Predicted Starting Lineups & Team News

Sunderland (4-2-3-1): Robin Roefs; Chris Rigg, Kevin  Danso, Luke O'Nien, Reinildo Mandava; Granit Xhaka, Noah Sadiki; Trai Hume, Enzo Le Fee, Nilson Angulo; Brian Brobbey

Defender Omar Alderete was sent off against Coventry and is suspended. Winger Romaine Mundle, defender Dan Ballard and midfielder Habib Diarra are ruled out with injuries.

Nordi Mukiele is likely to return to the squad for the Chelsea game. Regis Le Bris confirmed the defender’s upcoming availability and said, “Nordi should be available.”

Chelsea (4-2-3-1): Emiliano Martinez; Josh Acheampong, Wesley Fofana, Levi Colwill, Pep Chavarria; Romeo Lavia, Jordan Henderson; Estevao, Morgan Rogers, Cole Palmer; Pedro Neto

Defenders Maxence Lacroix and Reece James and striker Joao Pedro are sidelined due to injury. Midfielder Moises Caicedo is doubtful with a calf issue.

Emiliano Martinez could return to the starting lineup after a broken jaw. Xabi Alonso gave a positive pre-match update on the goalkeeper and said:

“Tomorrow we have our last training session before Sunday and we will decide but he is training well.”

Verdict

Sunderland look unconfident after a poor run of Premier League form. Chelsea are a strong side and there’s value on the Blues to win on Sunday.
