Tan Cheng Hoe’s men have been in solid form over the past year, recording six wins and only two defeats from eight international fixtures. Malaysia scored two goals or more in five of those six victories.
Philippines Suffer Late Defeat
The Philippines travel to Kuala Lumpur after a late 1-0 defeat against Thailand in New Clark City. Carles Cuadrat’s side looked set to secure a valuable point before Waris Choolthong bagged a late winner for the Group B leaders.
The Streetdogs began their ASEAN Championship campaign with a disappointing 4-1 home defeat against Myanmar.
A much-improved performance followed in their second fixture against Laos in Vientiane. Trailing at the interval, a superb second-half display secured a vital 4-1 victory. Jarvey Gayoso and Daisuke Sato were among the goalscorers for the Philippines.
Cuadrat’s men must now win on Saturday and hope other results go in their favour if they are to reach the semi-finals.

Encouraged by Malaysia’s performance against Thailand, Cheng Hoe warned his players not to underestimate a dangerous Philippines side.
“As a coach, I am still positive about how we played against Thailand, where we created a few chances to score,” Cheng Hoe said.
“If you give them the chance and confidence, they will perform well and continue to grow together for the next game.
“They have several players who have played in the Malaysian league, so they know the strength of our team. They are also dangerous when attacking.”

The Spanish boss has no reported injury issues.
Cuadrat admitted that the Philippines face an uphill battle to reach the semi-finals following their defeat against Thailand.
“Unfortunately, six points may not be enough to reach the semi-finals,” said the Spaniard. “During the previous tournament, the Philippines qualified with six points, but that may not be sufficient this time because of goal difference.
“We have to understand the situation. Our objective tonight was to secure at least one point, which would have taken us to seven and left qualification in our hands against Malaysia. The situation is now more difficult.”
