Sporting CP is set to face Arsenal in an exciting showdown where both teams have a lot at stake. Sporting's strong home form, having scored in all 22 home games this season, gives them hope against an Arsenal side coming off consecutive defeats. Despite Arsenal's recent challenges on the road, they will be keen to regain momentum. Both teams to score (BTTS) is the top betting selection for this match, given Sporting's potent attack and Arsenal's current form. Sporting Vangelis Pavlidis' recent goal-scoring form further boosts their prospects.

Sporting have been incredibly strong at home this season where they have scored in all 22 matches.

Arsenal are coming off back to back defeats and struggle to keep clean sheets on the road, BTTS my best bet here.

  • Sporting CP are undefeated in their last 20 home matches.
  • Sporting CP have seen BTTS in their last 3 games against Arsenal.
  • Sporting CP have drawn 3 of their last 4 matches against Arsenal.
  • Arsenal have seen BTTS in 6 of their last 7 away matches.

HTH - Sporting Searching for First Win

Sporting CP have met Arsenal on seven occasions and never won in regulation time. They got past the Gunners in the 2022/23 Europa League round of 16, winning on penalties after two draws.

The last clash between these clubs came in the 2024/25 Champions League group stage. Arsenal registered a thumping 5-1 win at Estádio José Alvalade, racing out to a 3-0 half-time lead in Lisbon.

Sporting Strong at Home

Sporting have won their previous three matches and scored 13 goals in the process.

The Lions came back to get past Bodo/Glimt in the Champions League round of 16. Trailing 3-0 in the tie, they won 3-0 at home to take it to extra time where Maxi Araújo and Rafael Nel scored to secure a 5-0 victory.

Pedro Gonçalves scored twice in Liga Portugal as Sporting won 4-1 at Alverca before the international break. Luis Suarez found the net to make it 33 goals in 40 appearances for the Portuguese club.

Rui Borges’ side are coming off a deserved 4-2 win against Santa Clara. Trailing early on, they led 3-1 at half-time and survived a late scare with Nel sealing the deal in added time.

The manager spoke after the victory: “It was important for us to give a clear demonstration of our group and they did it.

“They were focused, in a game where we conceded a goal in the first few minutes, and perhaps in the only chance that CD Santa Clara had in the first half. The team remained true to what they had to do, to our game plan, calm and confident.”

Worrying Signs for Arsenal

Arsenal have been the best team in England this season and won all eight matches in the Champions League.

Mikel Arteta’s side drew 1-1 at Bayer Leverkusen in the round of 16 first leg before winning 2-0 at home to advance. They have now lost two straight games for the first time this campaign.

The Gunners lost 2-0 to Manchester City in the League Cup final. They registered 38% possession at Wembley where they ended with 0.64-1.51 xG.

Arsenal were knocked out of the FA Cup on Saturday after a 2-1 defeat at Championship side Southampton. They failed to capitalise on 23-8 shots that included 7-4 on target.

Arteta spoke to BBC Sport after the defeat: “In the season you have to go through periods. Some of them are difficult for whatever reason.

“Now we have two very disappointing results and we have to pick ourselves up. Now we have to show what we are made of and the way to do that is on the pitch and not here.”

Confirmed Lineups & Team News

Sporting CP (4-2-3-1) Rui Silva; Iván Fresneda, Ousmane Diomande, Goncalo Inacio, Maxi Araújo; João Simões, Hidemasa Morita; Geny Catamo, Trincao, Pedro Gonçalves; Luis Suarez

Morten Hjulmand is is suspended with João Simões partnering Hidemasa Morita in midfield. Luis Suárez starts after serving a ban against Santa Clara.

Geovany Quenda is out with Rui Borges commenting: “The rest of the team will be available, except for Quenda. Unfortunately, because he's a player who will help a lot in this final stretch.”

Arsenal (4-2-3-1) David Raya; Ben White, William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhães, Riccardo Calafiori; Martin Zubimendi, Declan Rice; Noni Madueke, Martin Odegaard, Leandro Trossard; Viktor Gyökeres

Both players are in the starting side with Max Dowman, Gabriel Jesus, Gabriel Martinelli and Kai Havertz on the bench.

Verdict

Sporting have scored in all 22 home games this season and will fancy their chances against a wounded Arsenal side. I am avoiding the Gunners here and backing both teams to score in Lisbon.
