Sunderland vs Tottenham Betting Tips & Predictions - Tight Premier League Contest Expected

A lackluster match is anticipated between Sunderland and Tottenham due to their disappointing form this season. Both teams have struggled offensively, with Sunderland scoring an average of 0.75 goals per game in their last eight matches, while Tottenham have only managed 0.83 goals. Historically, Tottenham has dominated this fixture, winning ten out of the last 14 meetings since 2011. Sunderland enters the game on a high after a vital win over Newcastle, but both teams have significant injury concerns. A low-scoring draw with under 2.5 goals is anticipated.

Sunderland vs Tottenham Predictions

Both teams are in less than convincing form this year, and a hard-fought, low-scoring encounter seems likely to develop.

I have my stake on under 2.5 goals, and a small bet on a 1-1 draw at the Stadium of Light.

Goals in Short Supply

  • Sunderland have seen under 2.5 goals in 6 of their last 8 matches
  • Sunderland have scored an average of 0.75 goals per game in their last 8 matches
  • Sunderland have seen under 2.5 goals in 4 of their last 5 matches against Tottenham
  • Tottenham have seen under 2.5 goals in 3 of their last 5 away matches
  • Tottenham have scored an average of 0.83  goals per game in their last 8 matches

Tottenham Dominate Recent H2H Against Sunderland

Sunderland and Tottenham have met on 14 occasions since 2011. Tottenham won ten of those matches, while four games finished level. Sunderland have not beaten the Londoners since 2010.

Black Cats Stun Magpies

Sunderland come into Sunday's Premier League clash with confidence restored after a sensational 2-1 win at Newcastle three weeks ago. Brian Brobbey's stoppage-time goal secured home and away wins against the Magpies for the first time since 2014.

The Black Cats were fully deserving of their comeback win at St James' Park, registering an xG of 2.44 compared to the hosts' 1.29.

Regis Le Bris's side had endured a sticky spell of form before their historic win on Tyneside. Sunderland lost four and won just one of six previous Premier League fixtures. They also slipped to an embarrassing 1-0 defeat against Port Vale in the FA Cup.

A lack of firepower has been the underlying issue in recent weeks. Sunderland had failed to score more than one goal in any of eight previous fixtures before their win at Newcastle.

Despite their recent dip in form, Le Bris's men sit 11th in the division, 13 points clear of Tottenham.

Tottenham Demise Continues

Tottenham make the long trip to Sunderland following a three-week layoff since a damaging 3-0 home defeat against relegation rivals Nottingham Forest.

Igor Tudor's disastrous 44-day reign in the Tottenham hotseat came to an abrupt end with the Garibaldis emerging as well-deserved winners in London.

Since that defeat, Roberto de Zerbi has been appointed on a five-year deal. The former Brighton boss now has seven games to ensure Tottenham extend their stay in the top flight to 50 years.

The Lilywhites have been in dire form, losing seven of their last ten fixtures. Still searching for a first Premier League win of the calendar year, Spurs could drop into the relegation zone if results go against them this weekend.

Like the hosts, Tottenham have lacked quality in front of goal this year. The Londoners failed to score more than one goal in their last seven Premier League fixtures.

Predicted Lineups and Team News

Sunderland (4-3-3) Melker Ellborg; Lutsharel Geertruida, Luke O'Nien, Omar Alderete, Trai Hume; Granit Xhaka, Noah Sadiki, Chris Rigg; Habib Diarra, Chemsdine Talbi, Brian Brobbey.

Head coach Le Bris has some injury worries this weekend. Bertrand Traore, Jocelin Ta Bi, Nilson Angulo and Romaine Mundle are ruled out, while Daniel Ballard and Robin Roefs are doubtful.

Speaking to the media on Friday, Le Bris claimed Tottenham's inconsistency this season reflects the unforgiving nature of the Premier League.

“Tottenham are a big club, but they have struggled to generate momentum this season, and you never know how you create this vicious circle of injuries, efficiency, and doubts."

"It means that this league is unforgiving, really demanding, it is hard to break. They have good quality, but when you have doubt it is hard.”

Tottenham (3-4-3) Antonin Kinsky; Kevin Danso, Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven; Djed Spence, Archie Gray, Pape Sarr, Pedro Porro; Mathys Tel, Richarlison, Dominic Solanke.

Tottenham have a long list of unavailable players this weekend. Ben Davies, Dejan Kulusevski, James Maddison, Wilson Odobert and Yves Bissouma are all ruled out, while Guglielmo Vicario, Mathys Tel, Mohammed Kudus, Pape Matar Sarr and Rodrigo Bentancur will be assessed ahead of kick-off.

Head coach De Zebri downplayed expectations ahead of his first game in charge, insisting he does not view himself as an upgrade on his predecessors.

"I am proud and happy to be here, and I have to say thank you to Vinai (Venkatesham) and Johan (Lange) because they showed me a big, big confidence," said De Zerbi on Friday.

"I'm sure about the level of the players because I was very, very close to bringing many of these players to my former teams in the past.

"I think I am not better than Frank or Tudor because I consider them very good coaches.”

Verdict

Neither side can be backed with much conviction, and given their recent struggles in front of goal, a low-scoring outcome looks likely.

I'm tipping under 2.5 goals, with a low-scoring draw fancied at the Stadium of Light.
