Benfica travel to Cyprus to face Omonia Nicosia in the Europa League, aiming to continue their strong form. Benfica have won 10 of their last 11 games and are backed to demonstrate their superiority against an Omonia side that has rarely faced such high-caliber opposition. Key players like Vangelis Pavlidis and Gianluca Prestianni are highlighted, while the main prediction is a confident Benfica victory with a clean sheet.

  • Omonia rarely face teams as strong as Benfica
  • The Portuguese club have won 10 of their last 11 games
  • I am backing Benfica to show their class in Cyprus

Omonia had a lot of luck in their win against Celta Vigo and will find Benfica a step up in class. I am backing the Portuguese club to control this contest and cruise to victory.

Key Stats

  • Omonia have failed to score in 2 of their last 4 home matches (Cyprus League).
  • Benfica have won to nil 2 matches against Omonia.
  • Benfica have won 10 of their last 11 matches.
  • Benfica have won by 2+ goals in 6 of their last 7 matches.
  • Benfica have won to nil in 4 of their last 7 matches.

These clubs have met twice, in the 1981/82 European Cup. Benfica won 3-0 in Portugal and 1-0 in Cyprus.

Omonia Hard to Beat

Omonia haven’t lost in seven matches which includes five victories. Two of those came in the Europa League, 1-0 against Celta Vigo and 3-0 at Celje.

The Cypriot club are coming off a 2-2 draw against Olympiakos Nicosia. Trailing 2-0 in the first half, Costa Ewandro got a goal back and Lois Diony equalised 12 minutes into added time.

Henning Berg’s side are unbeaten in the Cyprus League, currently three points behind leaders AEL Limassol.

Benfica Banging in the Goals

Benfica have won 10 of their previous 11 matches. They went on an eight game winning streak, the run snapped at Porto where they lost 3-1 following Clément Lenglet’s red card.

The Eagles returned from the break with a 2-0 win over Vitoria de Guimaraes. Samuel Dahl and Georgiy Sudakov scored in a match where they had 2.76-0.43 xG.

Marco Silva’s side haven’t played since a 4-1 win against Celtic. Jhon Durán started and scored two goals before Vangelis Pavlidis came off the bench and wrapped it up.

Predicted Lineups & Team News

Omonia Nicosia (4-4-2) Fabiano Freitas; Jean-Kévin Duverne, Senou Coulibaly, Lubomir Satka, Jure Balkovec; Ewandro, Panagiotis Andreou, Mateo Maric, Jaden Montnor; Lois Diony, Muamer Tankovic

Left-back Fotis Kitsos is close to returning to action. Midfielder and winger David Akintola are out.

Veteran goalkeeper Fabiano Freitas has been preferred in the Europa League and should start ahead of Thomas Kaminski.

Benfica (4-2-3-1) Anatoliy Trubin; Alexander Bah, Tomás Araújo, Clément Lenglet, Samuel Dahl; Fredrik Aursnes, João Palhinha; Dodi Lukebakio, Claudio Echeverri, Gianluca Prestianni; Vangelis Pavlidis

Marco Silva has confirmed that Daniel Banjaqui, Enzo Barrenechea, Jakub Kamiński, Leandro Barreiro and Jhon Durán are out.

“Regarding the players who will be out, Banjaqui, Enzo, and Kaminski are not available. Leandro and Dúran are also out. It's a high number, unfortunately, at an important time, with the competitive density increasing and games every three days.”

The manager confirmed that Claudio Echeverri will start in Cyprus: “He's starting tomorrow. The weeks he spent with us during the international break were very important for him, but even before that, in the few minutes he had on the pitch, he gave responses that left me very satisfied, knowing that he is very young.”

“He's another player who, in games, has come on with a lot of personality. Now it's a matter of seeing how he responds as a starter. I'm very optimistic, but we have to see how he'll respond.”

Verdict

Benfica are scoring plenty of goals and should have plenty of possession in Cyprus. I don’t think Omonia will threaten the Eagles who can win this one to nil.
