Wolves vs Portsmouth Preview

Wolves are a decent home side and often control Championship matches at Molineux. Portsmouth struggle for consistency away and a Wanderers home win is the best bet.

Key Stats - Wolves Home Strength

  • Wolves have won 4 of their last 6 home games.
  • Portsmouth have lost 3 of their last 6 away matches.

H2H - Old Gold Advantage

Wolves have a 36-28 advantage against Portsmouth, alongside 26 draws.

Wolves Play on the Front Foot at Home

Wolves have won three of their five home games this season, scoring 11 goals. Wanderers have also seen over 2XG in two of their last four home matches.

The Old Gold’s most recent home win was a 1-0 victory over West Brom. Cesar Peixoto’s side had 1.95-0.29 XG.

The Midlands side then lost 1-0 at Middlesbrough. Wolves also fell to their first home defeat of the season against Derby after a 3-1 loss.

Peixoto’s team replied with a 2-1 comeback victory at Burnley on Friday. Wanderers conceded after 20 minutes, had 2 XG and Fernando Lopez and Tawanda Chirewa scored in each half.

Portsmouth Lacking Long-Term Away Form

John Mousinho’s Portsmouth are an unthreatening away side. They have failed to win in nine of their last 13 competitive fixtures on the road.

Pompey were winless in three consecutive away games. A 2-1 defeat at Bristol City and a 1-0 loss against Southampton came either side of a 0-0 stalemate at Charlton.

Portsmouth ended that streak with a 1-0 triumph at struggling Norwich. Pompey had two shots on target and Marko Milovanovic scored the winner just after half time.

Predicted Starting Lineups & Team News

Wolves (4-2-3-1): Jose Sa; Kieran Trippier, Nasser Djiga, Toti, Hugo Bueno; Andre, Jordan James; Jean-Ricner Bellegarde, Fernando Lopez, Mateus Mane; Adam Armstrong

Defender Rodrigo Gomes is out with a foot issue and midfielder Boubacar Traore is also injured. Attacking pair Raul Jimenez and Bertrand Traore are sidelined due to injury.

Adam Armstrong missed the Burnley match with a back problem. Cesar Peixoto was hopeful that the striker would be available against Portsmouth and said:

"We think he might be ready to play in the next game [against Portsmouth on Tuesday].

Portsmouth (4-2-3-1): Nicolas Schmid; Zak Swanson, Regan Poole, Madiodio Dia, Jayden Meghoma; Marlon Pack, Iyad Mohamed; Abu Kamara, Adrian Segecic, Ryan Kavuma McQueen; Marko Milovanovic

Midfielders Luke Brooke-Smith and Mark Kosznovszky and defensive pair Benjamin Arthur and Connor Ogilvie are injured.

Attacking trio Josh Murphy, Franco Umeh and Thomas Waddingham won’t feature due to injury.

Verdict

Wolves will want to build winning form after hitting back against Burnley on Friday. The Old Gold are strong at Molineux and can defeat inconsistent Portsmouth.
