Merab Dvalishvili On 14-Fight Win Streak

Merab Dvalishvili is the reigning and defending UFC bantamweight champion with a career record of 21-4 (3 KOs, 3 Subs).

Dvalishvili debuted in the UFC in late 2017 and got off to a rough start as he lost his first two fights, dropping a split decision to Frankie Saenz before losing via submission to Ricky Simon.

He finally got off the mark in late 2018 though, beating Terrion Ware via unanimous decision, and he backed that up the following year with a points victory over Brad Katona.

The 34-year-old Georgian then fought three times in 2020 and reeled off three more unanimous decision victories as he beat Casey Kenney, Gustavo Lopez and John Dodson.

Dvalishvili then began 2021 with a points win over Cody Stamann, and followed that up with his first stoppage win in the UFC as he knocked out Marlon Moraes in the second round.

‘The Machine’ fought just once in both 2022 and 2023, out-pointing Jose Aldo and Petr Yan respectively, and in his first outing of 2024 he beat Henry Cejudo on points.

That secured him a shot at the bantamweight title in September of last year, and he took his big chance as he dethrone Sean O’Malley via unanimous decision at UFC 306.

Dvalishvili has gone on to make three successful defences this year, sandwiching a third-round submission of O’Malley with unanimous decision wins over Umar Nurmagomedov and Cory Sandhagen.

Petr Yan Rebounded From Dvalishvili Loss With 3 Straight Wins

Petr Yan is the number three ranked bantamweight contender with a professional record of 19-5 (7 KOs, 1 Sub).

Yan debuted in the UFC in June 2018 and quickly climbed the ladder as he won six straight fights to earn a bantamweight title shot.

He knocked out Teruto Ishihara in the first round in his debut, beat Son Jin-soo on points, and then followed up a second-round stoppage of Douglas Silva de Andrade with unanimous decision wins over John Dodson and Jimmie Rivera.

The 32-year-old Russian then secured a title fight with his third-round knockout of Urijah Faber in December 2019.

Yan took his big opportunity as he knocked out Jose Aldo in the final round, but he failed to make a successful defence of the crown as he disqualified for an illegal knee when he faced Aljamain Sterling.

‘No Mercy’ rebounded with a decision win over Cory Sandhagen to win the interim title, only to then lose via split decision when he challenged Sterling in the rematch.

He then fell to a split decision loss against Sean O’Malley and a unanimous decision defeat to Merab Dvalishvili, before finally getting back on track last year.

Yan out-pointed Song Yadong and Deiveson Figueiredo, and he made it three-in-a-row in July when he beat Marcus McGhee via unanimous decision.

Verdict

Petr Yan has rebounded well from his 2023 loss to Merab Dvalishvili, but we do not expect him to get revenge.

Dvalishvili continues to bulldozer his way through the division with his relentless grappling breaking opponents, and we expect more of the same here.
