Japan showed a lot of weak spots in the group stages, which they started with back-to-back victories against Indonesia 98-53 and Saudi Arabia 86-80, clinching a spot in the quarterfinals after just two rounds.

They were tagged favorites in the final clash against South Korea but lacked defensive discipline, losing convincingly 100-83.

Rock-solid defending in the first half made the difference in the quarterfinal clash against Chinese Taipei, with Japan clinching an 85-78 victory.

The Samurai finished the previous Asian Games in 8th place, while their last major achievement was the FIBA Asian Cup gold medal in 1971.

China are Still Unbeaten

China's performances and results have been impressive so far, advancing to the Asian Games 2026 quarterfinals without losing a single match.

They cruised past underdogs Kazakhstan 99-61 in the opening round, while their second appearance was even more commanding, crushing Bahrein 105-59.

Even with heavy rotations in the third round, China demolished the reigning champions Philippines 105-61, while the quarterfinal contest against Saudi Arabia was slightly more challenging, winning 87-78 (25-15 in the final 10 minutes).
