When the Premier League returned from its lengthy hiatus, many believed that Arsenal would extend their lead at the top of the table to 12 points. All they had to do was beat a Bournemouth side that had drawn their last five outings.

A simple feat for a team that looks like it is marching towards the title. Then again, nothing in the Premier League is simple and with Alex Scott’s late winner on Saturday at the Emirates being cheered even louder in the blue half of Manchester, the title race now looks set to be a sprint finish.

With City doing their bit at Chelsea a day later, what could have been a nine-point gap at the end of last weekend has subsequently been reduced to six and with Pep Guardiola’s men possessing a game in hand over Arsenal, there could be another twist in this season’s Premier League tale.

Their game in hand with Crystal Palace is still to be scheduled, it could serve as the ace up their sleeve but that also depends on what happens this weekend. Why? Because there is the small matter of a top of the table clash at the Etihad.

Second playing host to first. Second knowing that a win would close the gap to three points having played a game less than Arsenal. Anything less than a maximum for City and Arsenal supporters will be breathing a huge sigh of relief. You can read how we think it will unfold in our City vs Arsenal tips.

Especially as positive momentum has left them at completely the worst stage of the campaign. They may have squeezed into the semi-finals of the Champions League at the expense of Sporting - they even made difficult work of that.

The Misfiring Cannons

The Gunners misfiring of late, their only win in their last five matches across all competitions coming in Portugal over a week ago. Defeat in the League Cup final to Sunday’s hosts, defeat to Southampton in the FA Cup, defeat to Bournemouth and a draw in Europe on Wednesday.

A worrying pattern for Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta to try and make sense of and if there is one overriding issue, it seems as if the current league leaders have an attacking problem. They have only scored three goals in their last five, one of those was from 12 yards.

Two goals in open play in 450 minutes of football, Manchester City scored three in 45 on Sunday. Their comfortable win over Chelsea last Sunday another example of how comfortable they are in going through the gears.

A near carbon copy to the gameplan of the recent Carabao Cup final when City ran out 2-0 winners thanks to a brace of headed goals by Nico O’Reilly. A gameplan that let Arsenal have the first half all to themselves, knowing there was more to come after the break.

Almost a sense of rope-a-dope as far as the now 2026 League Cup winners were concerned. Put Arsenal in a position to huff and puff in the first 45 minutes then land a knockout blow on them in second 45.

The kind of gameplan that only works if you do not concede in that opening phase but also have enough attacking output to make it count later on. Then again, that game plan has come to fruition in each of City’s last three outings.

Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea all swept aside. The Merseyside men did not even get all 45 minutes to try and land a glove on their opponents. City found the accelerator before the break and decided to inflict some slightly earlier punishment.

The only concern is whether this plan has been used too many times in the past few weeks. Does Pep Guardiola dare go to the same well and hope for the same result or does he have an even grander plan to reveal on Sunday.

The fact that City have had a week off whereas Arsenal played in midweek will not be lost on him. That could be a blessing but it could also be a curse. If there is one weakness in Guardiola’s own coaching manual it is perhaps having too much time to prepare.

The ability to overthink can be the undoing of even the very best, we saw it in the 2021 Champions League final when Thomas Tuchel outwitted Guardiola in Porto to give Chelsea a second tenure with the trophy.

The Last Hurrah

Like an artist who never knows when to apply the final brushstroke, just one more dab could ruin the masterpiece but if Guardiola can reel Arsenal in and lead his team to another Premier League title, it could also be the final brushstroke on his time at the Etihad.

Nobody quite knows what the Spaniard has in mind in terms of staying on, his contract locks him in until the end of the 2026/27 season but a herculean chase of Arsenal and the glory that comes with it could bring that departure forward by 12 months.

Of course, there is still six games of the season left and it may not even be that the mega-clash at the Etihad defines what happens in terms of crowning a champion. Do Arsenal give everything in trying to avoid defeat on Sunday, only to then slip up somewhere else?

Do they go for the jugular knowing that a win would solidify their status as champions elect but knowing that this comes with the trade-off of potentially leaving themselves exposed at the other end of the field.

Or do they take a page out of their ultra-defensive playbook. Squeeze the life out of Sunday’s clash and get out of Manchester with a point to their name. It may not be pretty but it may be the most effective.

City need to win the war; Arsenal need to win the battle. It looked like this was only going to be friendly fire just a week or so ago, now it’s a skirmish that will have the footballing world locked and loaded this Sunday afternoon.
