Maritimo’s away record in their previous top flight campaign was awful, losing 14 of 17 on the road. A trip to Famalicao is unlikely to be an easy one, a home win on the cards in Liga Portugal.

Famalicao have a narrow 7-6 advantage against Maritimo alongside six draws.

Maritimo haven’t tasted victory against the mainland club since 1994, a run of nine straight games.

Famalicao Looking for First Win

Famalicao finished fifth in Liga Portugal last season, conceding just 29 goals. Hugo Oliveira joined Strasbourg with the experienced Carlos Carvalhal taking over as manager.

The northern club had an impressive preseason, keeping seven straight clean sheets. They were eventually broken down in their final friendly, a 3-2 defeat to Como.

New striker Georgios Koutsias opened the scoring at Estoril but Fama faded in the second half. They had to settle for a 1-1 draw but Carvalhal was encouraged, saying: “It's the first game, it's always difficult, the players are a bit anxious, not yet in sync for a 90-minute match.

“In the second half we had two chances to score, we didn't score and we ended up conceding because we retreated too much. We will undoubtedly do better, this is the first game, but we will improve.”

First Road Trip for Maritimo

Maritimo are back in the top flight after dominating the Segunda Liga last season. Manager Miguel Moita left the club and was replaced by Mitchell van der Gaag.

The Dutchman returns to the club after guiding them from 2009 to 2010. The preseason was positive despite playing against some average opposition.

The Madeiran side enjoyed home advantage in their season opener and made it count with a 1-0 victory against Casa Pia. They had 39% possession but were efficient up front, Martín Tejón assisting Raphael Guzzo in the second half.

Van der Gaag knows there is a long season ahead: “We haven't won anything yet. These were three important points in the process we're going through. We have players who have been here longer, other players who are coming in, so winning was fundamental.”

Predicted Lineups & Team News

Famalicao (4-2-3-1) Lazar Carevic; Rodrigo Pinheiro, Léo Realpe, Finn van Breemen, Pedro Bondo; Tom van de Looi, Mathias de Amorim; Gil Dias, Pedro Santos Sorriso; Georgios Koutsias

Carvalhal has a full strength side after Óscar Aranda’s return from injury in Estoril. The manager talked about the Spaniard: “Aranda is a player who didn't play last year, he was out for a year, so obviously it's harder to keep up with his rhythm for 90 minutes.”

“The decision was to keep him on the bench to create an impact on the game, but what we ask of Oscar is that he grows with more time, more games, but to reach the desired level it will still take time/ He will be an important player for us.”

Maritimo (4-2-3-1) Alfonso Pastor; Igor Julião, Rafael Fernandes, Romain Correia, Paulo Henrique; Vladan Danilović, Rodrigo Andrade; Simo Bouzaidi, Raphael Guzzo, Martín Tejón; Adrián Butzke

Mitchell van der Gaag won’t make any changes to his winning team. Midfielder Ibrahim Alani has been signed on loan from Real Valladolid and could be an option off the bench.
