Rio Ave’s start to the season was hardly encouraging despite playing the second half with 10 men. Porto should have few problems in Vila do Conde where they can win with a clean sheet.

Porto have a 55-3 advantage against Rio Ave alongside 16 draws.

Slow Start for Rio Ave

Rio Ave avoided relegation last season, overcoming a poor run of form after the winter transfer window.

The Barcelos club had a solid preseason but came unstuck in their opener in Liga Portugal.

Sotiris Sylaidopoulos’ side were competitive in the first half at Gil Vicente but couldn’t overcome Andreas Ntoi’s 47th minute red card. They held on until the 87th minute, conceding a penalty in a 1-0 defeat.

The Greek manager looked for positives after the defeat: “The first half was a beautiful game to watch from both sides. Both teams tried to implement their ideas, there was a lot of intensity for the first game of the season.”

“In the first half, we had great opportunities to score and the game could have been different. After the red card it was a completely different game, which is normal, but I'm satisfied with the commitment and behavior of the team despite playing with ten men.”

Porto Take an Early Lead

Porto won Liga Portugal last season, getting it done in Francesco Farioli’s first campaign in charge. They were defensively superior, conceding 18 goals in 34 games.

The Dragons beat second division side Torreense 1-0 to claim the Super Cup. Victor Froholdt’s first half goal was the difference, Farioli’s side ending with 3-0 big chances in Coimbra.

Two penalties was the difference as Porto made a winning start to their title defence. André Silva and Gabri Veiga converted from the spot in a 2-0 victory over Alverca, Diogo Costa keeping another clean sheet.

Farioli admitted the need to improve defensively: "Defensive consistency is a priority and something we want to maintain and, if possible, improve upon compared to last season.

"It’s something we should be proud of, but the past is the past, and now we have new challenges ahead. Today we gave too much room to move, and we could have avoided some of those situations."

Andreas Ntoi is suspended here. Marios Vrousai could return to the starting side with Georgios Liavas moving to midfield.

Verdict

Porto started their title defence with another win, their defence too strong once again. Despite this one being played on the road, Rio Ave’s struggles up front should present the Dragons with another win to nil.
