Singapore face Indonesia in a crucial Group A fixture at the ASEAN Championship, with the Lions requiring only a draw to secure a spot in the semi-finals. Remaining unbeaten in nine consecutive competitive matches and holding a strong head-to-head record, Singapore are tipped to avoid defeat against an Indonesian side reeling from a heavy loss to Vietnam. With a solid defense and consistent performances, Singapore are well-placed to progress, while Indonesia must win to keep their hopes alive.

Singapore vs Indonesia Predictions

Singapore and Indonesia meet in a decisive Group A contest at Jalan Besar Stadium on Friday.

The Lions need only a draw to progress, while Indonesia must win to guarantee their place in the semi-finals.

Despite their underdog status, I fancy the tough-to-beat hosts to at least avoid defeat.

Singapore Tipped to Avoid Defeat

  • Singapore are unbeaten in their last 9 matches (competitive fixtures)
  • Singapore are unbeaten in their last 3 matches against Indonesia (90 minutes)
  • Indonesia failed to win 4 of their last 6 matches (competitive fixtures)

Singapore Hold Head-to-Head Advantage

Singapore and Indonesia have met 15 times since 2004. Singapore won seven games, while Indonesia claimed three victories. Five matches finished deadlocked.

Singapore Remain Unbeaten in Group A

Singapore return to Jalan Besar Stadium knowing a draw will secure their place in the ASEAN Championship.

The Lions gave their qualification hopes a major boost, holding defending champions Vietnam to a goalless draw in Hanoi earlier this week.

Goalkeeper Izwan Mahbud delivered an outstanding display as Singapore held on for a point despite sustained pressure from the hosts.

Gavin Lee’s side had begun their campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 victory against Cambodia in Phnom Penh before a 2-0 home win against Timor-Leste.

Singapore now sit second in Group A and will qualify for the semi-finals if they avoid defeat on Friday.

A much-improved nation in the past year, Lee’s men have not lost a competitive fixture since a 3-1 defeat against Vietnam at the 2024 ASEAN Championship.

Indonesia Suffer Heavy Defeat

Indonesia travel to Singapore after suffering a disappointing 3-0 home defeat against Vietnam earlier this week.

Early goals from Nguyen Van Vi and Nguyen Hai Long set the tone at Pakansari Stadium before Nguyen Xuan Son wrapped up victory for the defending champions.

Monday’s defeat leaves the Indonesians one point behind Singapore and Vietnam ahead of the final round of fixtures.

John Herdman’s side went into the contest against Vietnam with six points on the board after winning their opening two Group A fixtures. The Garuda began with an impressive 5-1 victory against Cambodia before scoring three late goals to beat Timor-Leste 3-0.

Indonesia must now win at Jalan Besar Stadium to guarantee their place in the semi-finals. Reuters

Recent competitive results have been mixed, with Herdman’s men winning only four of 12 competitive fixtures since the end of 2024.

Singapore vs Indonesia Squads and Team News

Singapore Squad

Goalkeepers: Izwan Mahbud, Syazwan Buhari, Ridhuan Barudin
Defenders: Ryhan Stewart, Amirul Adli, Lionel Tan, Irfan Fandi, Nur Adam Abdullah, Raoul Suhaimi, Akram Azman, Luth Harith
Midfielders: Joel Chew, Kyoga Nakamura, Song Ui-young, Shah Shahiran, Farhan Zulkifli, Glenn Kweh, Hariss Harun, Hami Syahin, Jacob Mahler, Harhys Stewart, Saifullah Akbar
Forwards: Nathan Mao, Ilhan Fandi, Shawal Anuar

Singapore boss Lee is likely to keep faith with the same side that started the goalless draw against Vietnam.

Izwan Mahbud will start in goal after producing a superb man-of-the-match performance in Hanoi.

Shawal Anuar is expected to keep his place as the focal point in the Lions' attack.

Indonesia Squad

Goalkeepers: Nadeo Argawinata, Cahya Supriadi, Muhammad Riyandi
Defenders: Brian Fatari, Wahyu Prasetyo, Jordi Amat, Rizky Ridho, Sandy Walsh, Dony Tri Pamungkas, Shayne Pattynama, Justin Hubner, Tim Geypens
Midfielders: Kadek Agung, Beckham Putra, Eliano Reijnders, Saddil Ramdani, Ivar Jenner, Thom Haye, Rayhan Hannan, Marc Klok
Forwards: Mitchell Baker, Egy Maulana Vikri, Ragnar Oratmangoen, Rizky Eka Pratama, Jens Raven

Herdman could make changes to his first XI after Monday’s disappointing defeat against Vietnam. Tim Geypens, Beckham Putra and Jens Raven are among those likely to earn recalls to the side.

Speaking to the media this week, Herdman emphasised the need to maintain a solid shape for Friday’s crunch contest against Singapore.

"I think for us, we have to maintain a tight formation. Whether we're attacking or defending, the formation must remain tight," said John Herdman in a press conference after the match against Vietnam.

"We just have to learn the right moments to keep our defence tight when attacked and our defensive transitions better organised," he said.

Verdict

Singapore have proved difficult to break down and need only a draw to secure their place in the ASEAN Championship semi-finals.

Considering the hosts’ solid form and Indonesia’s mixed competitive results, Singapore look overpriced to secure qualification.

I have my stake on Singapore to avoid defeat in Friday’s crucial ASEAN Championship contest.
