Vietnam take on Thailand in the first leg of the ASEAN Championship final at Rajamangala Stadium. Vietnam come into the match on an extraordinary run, with 23 wins in their last 25 matches, and are tipped to maintain this momentum. Despite Thailand's home advantage and strong recent tournament performance, they struggled in the semifinals and have key players contending with fatigue. With Vietnam's potent attack and clean team bill, they are favorites to secure an away win and put themselves in a strong position for the championship.

Thailand vs Vietnam Predictions

Thailand and Vietnam square off at Rajamangala Stadium in the first leg of the ASEAN Championship final on Saturday.

Vietnam have been in sensational form for well over a year, and they can build a first-leg advantage at Rajamangala National Stadium.

I have stakes on Vietnam to win and on the visitors to score two goals or more.

Champions Backed to Win in Bangkok

  • Thailand lost their last 2 matches against Vietnam
  • Thailand conceded 2+ goals in 3 of their last 5 matches against Vietnam
  • Vietnam won 23 of their last 25 matches
  • Vietnam scored 2+ goals in 20 of their last 22 matches

Thailand Hold Head to Head Advantage

Thailand and Vietnam have met on 16 occasions since 2008. Thailand won seven matches while Vietnam picked up four wins, including a 3-2 win in Thailand last year.

Vietnam won their last two most recent meetings, with both victories coming in the 2024 ASEAN Championship final.

Thailand Survive Semi-Final Scare

Thailand return to Rajamangala Stadium after surviving a major scare in Tuesday's ASEAN Championship semi-final second leg.

Anthony Hudson's side slipped to a surprise 2-1 home defeat against Singapore but still progressed to the final with a 4-3 aggregate victory, after winning the opening contest 3-1.

Kakana Khamyok’s second-half penalty proved crucial as the Thais held on to secure their place in this week’s two-legged final.

Hudson’s men struggled to gain a foothold against Singapore, with only 38% registered at Rajamangala National Stadium.

The War Elephants had enjoyed a flawless ASEAN Championship campaign until their shock defeat earlier this week. Thailand won all five previous fixtures, with clean sheets kept in each of their four Group B fixtures.

Vietnam Cruise Into Final

Vietnam make the trip to Bangkok after completing an emphatic 4-0 aggregate semi-final victory against Malaysia.

Kim Sang-sik's side backed up last week’s 2-0 victory in Kuala Lumpur with another 2-0 success at My Dinh Stadium on Wednesday.

Nguyen Xuan Son stepped off the bench to score twice as the imperious Vietnamese extended their tremendous unbeaten run.

The defending champions have been in superb form throughout the tournament, winning five and drawing one of six fixtures.

Vietnam began with a 7-0 demolition of Timor-Leste before a goalless draw against Singapore. Successive 3-0 and 3-1 wins against Indonesia and Cambodia secured top spot in Group A before back-to-back 2-0 victories against Malaysia in the semi-finals.

The away side have now won 22 of 25 unbeaten matches completed since September 2024.

Head coach Hudson will assess his players' condition after admitting several players were struggling with fatigue and cramp during Tuesday's defeat against Singapore.

Kakana Khamyok is pushing for a recall after his second-half penalty against Singapore.

Hudson attempted to shift the pressure onto defending champions Vietnam ahead of Saturday’s first leg.

“I think the pressure is clearly on Vietnam to win the game. I think we can say that honestly. It's not mind games or me trying to put pressure -- it's just the truth.

“In the beginning of the tournament, everyone wrote us off. The messages I got, everything I read -- 'the group is not good', 'why is he picking this squad', 'this team is not going to get out of the group' -- that's all we heard in the beginning.

“For me, the team have done an incredible job to get to this point. When you get to a final, anything can happen.”

Vietnam Squad

Kim Sang-sik reported no new selection issues after Wednesday's victory against Malaysia.

Xuan Son is expected to return to the starting XI after coming off the bench to score twice in Hanoi.

Sang-sik is determined to make the most of Vietnam’s opportunity to retain the ASEAN Championship title after guiding the defending champions into another final.

“After winning the last ASEAN Championship, we’re in the final again, so this is history for Vietnam football and I don’t want to miss this chance,” said Kim, who was also in charge when Vietnam defeated Thailand in the 2024 decider.

“The players want to become champions, and I hope we can prove that on the pitch. We’re the defending champions, and we’re going to do everything to win.”

Kim reported no new selection issues after Wednesday's victory against Malaysia.

Xuan Son is expected to return to the starting XI after coming off the bench to score twice in Hanoi.

Verdict

Vietnam have been in outstanding form and will be confident of maintaining their superb winning run in Thailand.

I fancy an away win, with the visitors also tipped to score at least two goals.
