Timor-Leste will face Indonesia in their third ASEAN Championship Group A match, hoping to halt a 18-match losing streak. Indonesia arrives in strong form after a 5-1 win over Cambodia and is backed to secure another emphatic victory, likely covering a -3 handicap. The Garuda have won all six previous meetings between the sides, highlighting the gulf in quality. Key players like Mitch Baker, fresh from a debut hat-trick, are expected to play a role as Indonesia possibly rotates ahead of tougher fixtures. Timor-Leste, meanwhile, continue to struggle defensively.

Timor-Leste vs Indonesia Predictions

Timor-Leste face regional rivals Indonesia at Chonburi Stadium in Friday’s ASEAN Championship Group A contest.

Ze Pedro’s side have suffered heavy defeats in their opening two group matches, while Indonesia began their campaign with an emphatic 5-1 victory against Cambodia.

Considering the gulf in class, Indonesia should cover a -3 handicap this weekend.

Indonesia Backed for Big Victory

  • Timor-Leste lost their last 18 matches (ASEAN Championship)
  • Timor-Leste conceded an average of 3.83 goals per game in their last 12 defeats
  • Indonesia won 4 of their last 5 matches
  • Indonesia scored an average of 3.8 goals per game in their last 5 wins

Indonesia Dominate H2H Record

Indonesia boast a perfect record against Timor-Leste, winning all six previous meetings. The Garuda scored 21 goals and conceded only twice across those six encounters.

Indonesia recorded a 3-1 victory when the countries last met in the ASEAN Championship in 2018

Timor-Leste Endure Difficult Start

Timor-Leste face their third Group A fixture on Friday after leaking nine goals in back-to-back defeats in the past week.

Jose Salazar’s side suffered a crushing 7-0 defeat against defending champions Vietnam in their opening Group A fixture before a 2-0 reversal against Singapore on Monday.

Timor-Leste qualified for the ASEAN Championship group stage with a convincing 6-1 aggregate play-off victory against Brunei, but have struggled to up their game against markedly superior opponents.

Historically, the Southeast Asian minnows have been overwhelmed at this competition. Timor-Leste have conceded 86 goals while losing all 18 of their previous matches across five ASEAN Championship appearances.

Indonesia Make Impressive Start

Indonesia opened their ASEAN Championship campaign with an emphatic 5-1 home victory against Cambodia on Monday.

Teenage forward Mitch Baker enjoyed a remarkable international debut, scoring a hat-trick as the Garuda immediately moved into contention for a semi-final place.

John Herdman’s side have enjoyed a strong run of form this year, winning four of five games played since March. Indonesia scored 13 goals in those victories, including an impressive 3-0 win against Oman.

Indonesia are still seeking their first ASEAN Championship title after finishing as runners-up on six previous occasions.

Timor-Leste vs Indonesia Team News

Timor-Leste: (5-4-1) Dylan Niski; Luis Figo, Jackson Fowler, Eric Silva, Ryan Jom, Liam Farrugia; Zenivio Mota, Tristan Arrarte, Claudio Osorio, Joao Rangel; Zion Cruz.

Timor-Leste are expected to retain a defensive formation after limiting Singapore to two goals on Monday.

Zion Cruz is likely to lead the underdogs' attack while Olagar Xavier and Palomito Antonio are among those pushing for recalls after appearing from the bench earlier this week.

Indonesia: (3-4-3) Nadeo Argawinata; Sandy Walsh, Rizky Ridho, Shayne Pattynama; Eliano Reijnders, Ivar Jenner, Marc Klok, Dony Tri Pamungkas; Beckham Putra, Mitchell Baker, Thom Haye.

Head coach Herdman may rotate his starting XI ahead of Monday’s considerably tougher meeting with defending champions Vietnam.

Herdman is likely to rest some senior players before Indonesia face Vietnam, with the Garuda possessing enough depth to rotate without substantially weakening their side.

Teenage forward Baker is set to retain his starting position after scoring a debut hat-trick.

Speaking after Indonesia’s victory against Cambodia, Herdman praised Baker’s dream debut and the collective effort behind his hat-trick.

“Mitchell has enjoyed a dream debut. It was a wonderful team performance and a very special occasion for a young player to score three goals on his international debut,” Herdman said.

“He certainly met expectations tonight. Scoring a hat-trick on your debut as a 19-year-old in front of more than 20,000 people is a significant challenge.

“The intensity and effort from players such as Eliano Reijnders and Dony Tri Pamungkas contributed to the performance. I could mention the entire team.

“The players worked extremely hard to press, regain possession high up the pitch and deliver crosses into Mitchell. Thom Haye’s delivery was at an exceptional level tonight.”

Verdict

Indonesia operate at a far higher level, and they should ease to a dominant win in Friday’s ASEAN Championship contest.

I have my stake on the Indonesian’s to cover a -3 handicap.
