Vietnam, the defending ASEAN champions, are set to face Singapore in a high-stakes Group A clash. Vietnam's impressive 17-game winning streak and dominant 7-0 opening win highlight their superiority, while Singapore, despite a perfect start in the group, have struggled in recent matchups against Vietnam. Key team news includes returns from injury for Vietnam and several absentees for Singapore. The consensus is a comfortable win for Vietnam, expected to score at least three goals, continuing their dominance in the region.

Vietnam vs Singapore Predictions

Defending champions Vietnam host Group A leaders Singapore at My Dinh National Stadium on Friday.

Kim Sang-sik’s side opened their title defence with a dominant 7-0 victory against Timor-Leste, and they should maintain winning form this week.

I have my stake on Vietnam to win with at least three match goals.

Vietnam Backed Against Group Leaders

  • Vietnam won their last 17 matches
  • Vietnam have seen over 2.5 goals in 14 of their last 17 matches
  • Vietnam scored 3+ goals in 4 of their last 6 matches
  • Singapore lost 5 of their last 6 matches against Vietnam
  • Singapore have seen over 2.5 goals in 7 of their last 9 matches

Vietnam Dominate Recent H2H Record

Vietnam and Singapore have met on nine occasions since 2008. Vietnam won six of those games while three matches finished level.

Singapore slipped to a 3-1 reversal when these nations last met at the ASEAN Championship two years ago.

Vietnam Make Emphatic Start to Title Defence

Vietnam made a superb start to their ASEAN Championship title defence with a comprehensive 7-0 victory against Timor-Leste in Chonburi.

Nguyen Dinh Bac bagged a hat-trick, Do Hoang Hen struck twice, and Nguyen Xuan Son and Nguyen Quang Hai also found the net.

Kim Sang-sik’s side controlled the contest from the outset and established themselves as one of the favourites to win the tournament.

The defending champions secured the title in 2024 after defeating Thailand 5-3 on aggregate in the final.

The Golden Star Warriors are now attempting to retain the ASEAN Championship for the first time in their history.

A remarkable winning run will give the champions the confidence they need to extend their winning run. Vietnam won each of their last 17 games since December 2024. The Golden Star Warriors scored an average of 2.8 goals per game in those victories.

Singapore Make Perfect Group A Start

Singapore come into Friday’s contest after a perfect start to their ASEAN Championship campaign.

Gavin Lee’s side began the tournament with a 2-1 victory against Cambodia in Phnom Penh before securing a 2-0 home success against Timor-Leste.

Goals from Ilhan Fandi and Song Ui-young secured victory against Timor-Leste, a result that leaves the Lions top of Group A ahead of Friday’s fixture.

Singapore have been up and down in the past year, recording six wins and four defeats from 11 games played since September 2025.

Three-time ASEAN Championship winners, Singapore fell to a 5-1 aggregate defeat against Vietnam in the semi-finals of the 2024 event.

Vietnam vs Singapore Team News

Vietnam: (3-4-3) Dang Van Lam; Bui Hoang Viet Anh, Nguyen Thanh Chung, Nguyen Nhat Minh; Truong Tien Anh, Nguyen Hoang Duc, Do Hoang Hen, Nguyen Van Vi; Nguyen Quang Hai, Nguyen Xuan Son, Nguyen Dinh Bac.

Kim Sang-sik could retain much of the side that produced an emphatic opening victory against Timor-Leste. Dinh Bac is expected to continue in attack after scoring a hat-trick, while Xuan Son should lead the line following his return from injury.

Son’s return provides a major boost for the Vietnamese after the Brazil-born striker recovered from a broken leg suffered during the 2024 final.

The forward scored seven times in the 2024 edition before marking his return to the 2026 tournament with a goal against Timor-Leste.

Singapore: (4-2-3-1) Izwan Mahbud; Ryhan Stewart, Irfan Fandi, Hariss Harun, Nur Adam Abdullah; Kyoga Nakamura, Harhys Stewart; Faris Ramli, Song Ui-young, Shawal Anuar; Ilhan Fandi.

Singapore boss Lee is likely to retain confidence in the same side that eased past Timor-Leste.

The Lions are unable to call on four key players this week. Safuwan and Ikhsan remain unavailable after their clubs declined to release them for the tournament, while Rudy Khairullah and Irfan Najeeb are sidelined through injury.

Ilhan Fandi is expected to lead the attack in the absence of his brother Ikhsan.

Lee acknowledged that his side face a significant step up in quality this weekend.

“Facing Vietnam presents a completely different set of challenges,” Lee said.

“We will draw on the experience from our training camp in Okinawa, Japan, to produce our best performance on the pitch. The lessons we learned about dealing with pressure against Japanese teams have been valuable.”

Verdict

Vietnam have been in sensational form in the past year, and they should have too much class for Singapore this week.

I expect Vietnam to win with at least three goals scored.
