Two of the strongest volleyball nations in the world meet in one of the standout fixtures of the current Volleyball Nations League round, but both are also looking to recover from unexpected losses.
Brazil Looking to Return to Winning Ways
Brazil are hoping to improve on last year’s bronze medal in the Nations League 2025 and so far their results have been strong, sitting near the top of the table with a 4-1 record.
They were barely challenged in the opening three rounds, beating Iran 3-1, Belgium 3-1 and Serbia 3-0.
The final game of Week 1 was a South American derby against Argentina, with Brazil ultimately claiming a 3-2 victory after a massive comeback after trailing 2-0.
However, the role of heavy favorites in the Week 2 opener against Ukraine did not help them, as Brazil suffered their first defeat of the campaign 3-1.
Italy Searching for an Immediate Response
The Azzurri have had plenty of success on the biggest stage over the last 12 months, finishing runners-up in Nations League 2025 after losing to Poland in the final before successfully defending the World Championship title in Manila with victory over Bulgaria.
The new VNL campaign started with a surprising 3-2 defeat to underdog France, but Italy responded well by beating Germany 3-1 and Turkey 3-0.
After taking down USA 3-2 as slight underdogs, Italy slipped earlier this week in the World Championship final rematch against Bulgaria, losing 3-2 despite opening with a dominant 25-18 first set.
Yesterday brought an even bigger disappointment as the Azzurri suffered a shock 3-0 defeat to underdog Ukraine, arguably one of their weakest displays in recent years after scoring just 35 points across the final two sets.
Verdict
Both teams entered their most recent matches as clear favorites and both were stunned by Ukraine. Backing the reigning world champions to cover the +1.5 handicap looks like the safest option in my eyes.
