Italy dropped just one set in the opening five matches, so it's understandable to see such low odds on them to beat struggling Bulgaria in Istanbul.
Italy Dominating the Group Stage
Italy started the tournament in dominant fashion, cruising past Croatia 3-0 in sets while allowing just nine points to the opposition in the opening set, then claimed three more wins against Montenegro, Sweden and Slovakia (all 3-0).
Their biggest test so far was the clash against France on Wednesday. The opposition were competitive in the first two sets, but ultimately Azzurri won 3-1 to secure first position.
At EuroVolley 2023, Italy were favored to go all the way but lost to Turkey 3-2 in the semifinals, while also losing the bronze medal match against the Netherlands 3-0.
Bulgaria Struggling for Consistency
After starting the tournament with a 3-0 win over Ukraine, Bulgaria were beaten in the second round by Greece 3-1, followed by an awful performance in a 3-0 loss to Serbia.
Their crucial playoff points were secured in the fourth round after defeating Austria 3-2, so a loss to co-hosts Czech Republic in straight sets in the final round didn't matter much.
The Bulgarians had a disastrous season in the Nations League 2026, where they lost their elite status after finishing as the 18th and last team with a 2-10 record.
Verdict
This year has been quite difficult for Bulgaria, struggling in the VNL while having just one solid performance at EuroVolley 2026 so far. I am predicting Italy to win this clash in dominant fashion.
