Hibernian and Celtic are set for an exciting clash at Easter Road, with recent statistics pointing to a high-scoring contest. Hibernian, coming off a derby defeat, face a Celtic side on a winning streak but with defensive vulnerabilities, especially away from home. Both teams tend to be involved in games with lots of goals—making BTTS and over 2.5 goals the top pick. Team news includes key suspensions for Hibs and notable absentees for Celtic. Expect a competitive and entertaining match.

Hibernian vs Celtic Predictions

Hibernian can test a Celtic side that rarely keeps a clean sheet. BTTS and over 2.5 goals is my best bet in what is likely to prove a fascinating Premiership contest in Edinburgh.

Goals Likely in Edinburgh

  • Hibernian have seen an average of 2.74 goals per game scored in their last 17 home matches (Premiership)
  • Hibernian have seen BTTS & over 2.5 goals in 4 of their last 6 matches against Celtic (Premiership)
  • Celtic have seen BTTS & over 2.5 goals in 8 of their last 10 matches (Premiership)

Celtic Hold H2H Advantage Against Hibernian

Celtic and Hibernian have met on 24 previous occasions since 2020. Celtic won 15 of those matches while Hibernian secured three victories, including a 2-1 success at Parkhead in their most recent encounter.

Hibernian Suffer Derby Defeat

Hibernian come into Sunday's Premiership contest after a frustrating 2-1 defeat against local rivals Hearts last weekend.

Martin Boyle's seventh-minute strike gave Hibs an early lead at Easter Road in a lively start to the derby. However, a rush of blood from goalkeeper Raphael Sallinger, sent off for handling outside his box, followed by a second yellow for Felix Passlack early in the second half, left the hosts with nine men for over 45 minutes.

With a two-man advantage, second-half goals from Warren O'Hora (own goal) and Blair Spittal secured a priceless victory for the Premiership leaders.

Having enjoyed a six-game unbeaten run between February and April, Hibs have now lost back-to-back Premiership games for the first time since November.

Usually solid at Easter Road, Gray's men lost only three of 17 home Premiership fixtures this season (W8, D6, L3). An average of over 2.7 goals per game were scored in those matches.

With four games still to play, Hibs sit fifth in the division, six points behind fourth-placed Motherwell.

Celtic Extend Winning Run

Celtic travel to Edinburgh after an entertaining 3-1 win against Falkirk last weekend. Daizen Maeda ended his three-month Premiership goal drought with a brace to secure a hard-fought victory for Martin O'Neill's side.

Both teams had their moments in an evenly balanced contest, but Celtic proved more clinical in front of goal. Final xG tallies of 1.1 and 0.93 underlined the competitive nature of last week's clash at Parkhead.

High-scoring outcomes have been a recurring theme in the Hoops domestic results this year. Ten of their last 13 Premiership or Scottish Cup ties finished with BTTS and over 2.5 goals scored.

On the road, the Scottish champions have been far from defensively secure this season. The Bhoys conceded 23 goals in 17 away Premiership fixtures since August.

Locked in a gripping Premiership title race with Hearts and Rangers, Celtic sit second in the division, one point clear of the Gers and three points behind the Jambos.

Predicted Lineups and Team News

Hibernian (3-4-1-2) Jordan Smith; Warren O'Hora, Rocky Bushiri, Jordan Obita; Kanayo Megwa, Daniel Barlaser, Miguel Chaiwa, Nicky Cadden; Jamie McGrath; Owen Elding, Martin Boyle

Head coach Gray will be forced into at least two changes from the side that lost against Hearts. Felix Passlack and Raphael Sallinger both miss out after their dismissals in last weekend's derby defeat.

Josh Mulligan and Grant Hanley (suspended) are also unavailable.

Gray bemoaned his side's lack of discipline in the 2-1 defeat against their Edinburgh rivals.

"We find ourselves 1-0 up, brilliant. Then, we've beat ourselves, same as last week. It's very hard to win games of football with 11 men, especially against the team that are top of the league at the moment.

"One thing I can't fault, and I'm full of praise for, is the nine men on the pitch. They gave us everything, defended with their lives and restricted Hearts to little."

Celtic (4-2-3-1) Viljami Sinisalo; Tony Ralston, Auston Trusty, Liam Scales, Kieran Tierney; Callum McGregor, Arne Engels; James Forrest, Benjamin Nygren, Hyun-jun Yang; Daizen Maeda

Interim boss O'Neill has half a dozen absentees this weekend. Jota, Kasper Schmeichel, Alistair Johnston, Cameron Carter-Vickers, Callum Osmand, Adam Montgomery and Julián Araujo are also unavailable.

O'Neill admitted he was pleased to collect the Manager of the Month award for a second time this season, while deflecting praise onto his players and staff.

"Even at 74 years of age, it's still actually nice to get it," he said.

"But this is for work by the players and the coaches, and I have seriously played a little part in the proceedings – but not as much as I should be in getting this award."

Verdict

Another thrilling Premiership tussle is expected at Easter Road this weekend. I'm banking on BTTS and over 2.5 goals in Edinburgh.
